Ever since their takeover by a Hollywood A-list duo, Wrexham have had big plans.
Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney completed their purchase of the non-league side back in early 2021. Since then they have invested in the club's infrastructure and signed up some high-profile sponsors such as TikTok.
They have also spoken of one day aiming to reach the Premier League. Now, one of the co-owners has made a tongue-in-cheek suggestion that they are potentially eyeing up the almighty scalp of Manchester United icon Cristiano Ronaldo.
The Portugal superstar, 37, only made a fairytale return to Old Trafford last summer following successful spells at Real Madrid and Juventus, but he is considering his future now that the transfer window is open.
United endured a shocking campaign last season - their worst in Premier League history. The Red Devils recorded only 16 wins, scored 57 goals and picked up just 58 points as they finished sixth, a staggering 35 points behind title-winners Man City.
As first reported by The Times and confirmed by Mirror Football, Ronaldo is unhappy that he will not be playing in the Champions League next season, with United only qualifying for the Europa League - a competition he has never played in. Now, McElhenney has suggested a potential albeit highly unlikely destination for Ronaldo's next port of call.
Responding to a tweet that read: "Cristiano Ronaldo has asked to leave Manchester United if they receive a suitable offer this summer, per multiple reports", McElhenney simply wrote: "Define suitable."
However, the cheeky suggestion is unlikely to tempt Ronaldo into dropping down for a spell in the National League. Wrexham will once again be the bookmakers' favourites to seal the National League title next term with no doubt a clutch of high-profile signings set to be announced between now and the season opener.
Having reached the play-offs last season they fell at the semi-final hurdle following a 5-4 defeat after extra time in a pulsating game against eventual winners Grimsby. A dejected manager Phil Parkinson said afterwards: "Myself and the staff and the players are hurting because we've conceded goals we shouldn't have conceded. It was always going to be a battle in terms of Waterfall and the set plays, we know how strong he is. That cost us today. I felt we'd we'd win today and I felt few things have gone against us to stop that."
As for Ronaldo, a number of sides have made their interest known, including Napoli, Bayern Munich and PSG. Chelsea owner Todd Boehly has already held talks with his agent, Jorge Mendes.
The bombshell over his desire to leave comes on the eve of Erik ten Hag's first pre-season t our, and while the new United manager is shifting his focus to finding a replacement, Ronaldo and his agent are now scouring the continent for his next destination.
