Where do England vs Italy rank in FIFA world rankings ahead of Euro 2020 final

Following their wins over Denmark and Spain respectively, England and Italy will battle it out at Wembley on Sunday evening in the Euro 2020 final.

Gareth Southgate's side have been on an upward curve since the World Cup in 2018, reaching the semi-finals of that tournament and in the UEFA Nations League, alongside booking a place in their first international tournament final since 1966.

Similar to England, Roberto Mancini has changed the fortunes of the Azzuri since has was appointed in 2018. After failing to qualify for the 2018 World Cup under Gian Piero Ventura, the former Manchester City boss has transformed this team back into the footballing giant it once was.

Despite both sides' respective resurgence, has this at all affected their positions in the FIFA Rankings?

The men's FIFA World Ranking'sis currently led by Belgium, who were eliminated from Euro 2020 at the hands of Italy.

The teams of the men's member nations of FIFA are ranked based on their game results, with the most successful teams being ranked.

Ahead of Euro 2020, both England and Italy were included in the top ten best teams in the world, with the Three Lions sat in fourth place whilst the Azzurri were three places behind in seventh.

The top ranked sides who played at the Euros were Belgium (1st), France (2nd), Portugal (5th) and Spain (6th). Two of those sides exited the competition in the last 16 and will likely drop a place or two when England or Italy win the Euro's.

It is a stark contrast from the last international tournament both sides played.

Before the 2018 World Cup in Russia, the Three Lions occupied 13th place, with the likes of Peru, Chile, and Poland all above them in the World Rankings.

Italy were in 19th spot following their disappointing qualifying campaign, just in front of the finalists from that particular World Cup, Croatia.

And once the tournament had concluded, England rose to sixth place after reaching the semi-finals whilst Italy did eventually drop out of the top 20, falling to 21st place after being overtaken by Peru and Sweden.

The last time England played Italy at a European Championship's was during the quarter finals of the 2012 competition, an affair won by Italy on penalties.

Before the tournament, Roy Hodgson's side were ranked sixth in the world, with Cesare Prandelli's side occupying 12th position.

The Italians reached the final of the tournament but were outclassed by the number one side at the time Spain, who boasted the likes of Andreas Iniesta, Xavi, David Silva, the list goes on.

Despite failing to reach the semi-finals, England's rank improved and moved them three places to third behind Spain and Germany, with Italy moving six places and into sixth.

After Euro 2020 concludes, there may be a change in positioning following France and Belgium's disappointing Euro's campaign. However, third placed Brazil have just reached the Copa America final against Argentina, and victory could move them to top spot.
