It's been nearly eight years since the Magpies and Black Cats clashed, and it's a game that has been dominated by Sunderland in recent encounters.
The Magpies have endured a shocking time against their bitter rivals, and they will hope to put that right this weekend.
Newcastle are in the Premier League and have enjoyed an incredible rise since the club's owners bought the Toon in October 2021.
However, a run of seven defeats in eight across all competitions has left many supporters feeling nervous about the prospect of playing their Championship neighbours.
When was the last time Newcastle beat Sunderland?
It has been nearly 13 years since the Magpies last beat the Black Cats in a first-team fixture.

But apart from those games, it's been slim pickings for Newcastle fans.
The Toon are winless in their last nine matches against Sunderland, which includes a run of six consecutive victories for the Black Cats from April 2013 to October 2015.
Of course, this is the first Tyne-Wear derby since the 2015/16 season because both clubs have spent time in the EFL.
In 2016, the Toon were relegated to the Championship but were promoted the following season, while the Black Cats went down and even ended up in League One.
They are now back in the Championship, pushing for promotion, while the Magpies will be hoping to turn around their season.
However, on Saturday, none of that matters as Newcastle and Sunderland do battle once more.
