What happened to the 23 players who only made one PL appearance for Arsenal

Mikel Arteta's stint as Arsenal manager has seen the Gunners work through a number of players, but that's something we have seen from the club ever since they played their first Premier League game back in 1992.

Arteta has overseen a significant overhaul, with a number of the stars brought to the club by Unai Emery and Arsene Wenger no longer in north London. It has been working wonders, too, with a Boxing Day win against West Ham strengthening the Gunners' position at the top of the Premier League table.

While some players have racked up appearances during Arsenal's time as a Premier League club, others have managed just a single appearance in the competition. Here, Mirror Football takes a closer look at those one-game wonders.

David Bentley

Bentley's league debut came at the end of the 2003-04 season, as Arsenal completed their Invincibles season with a point at Portsmouth. The academy product went on to play Premier League football for the likes of Blackburn and Spurs, for whom he scored in a 4-4 North London Derby draw, but he would end up retiring aged 29 after falling out of love with football.

Amaury Bischoff

Manager Wenger admitted the signing of Bischoff was a gamble due to his injury history. The Portugal international made his debut in a win at Portsmouth in 2009 before moving to Germany, and was most recently seen on the books of French lower-league side SR Colmar.

Tommy Black

A product of Arsenal's academy, Black replaced Marc Overmars towards the end of a game at Everton in the 1999-2000 season. The midfielder spent the bulk of his career with Crystal Palace, helping them win promotion to the Premier League in 2004, but had dropped into non-league by the age of 30.

Fabian Caballero

Signed by Wenger from Paraguayan outfit Cerro Porteno, Paraguayan forward Caballero took Freddie Ljungberg's place in a 1998 draw with Middlesbrough. Fans in the UK might know the South American best for his stint with Dundee in the Scottish top flight, and he became a bit of a journeyman as he kept playing well into his thirties.

Jay Emmanuel-Thomas

Big things were expected of Emmanuel-Thomas after his efforts for Arsenal's age-group teams, but his only senior league appearance came in October 2010 as Arsenal lost to Chelsea. After trying his luck in the Championship and League One, the forward decided to give overseas football a go, and is now playing in India after spells in the Thai and Scottish top tiers.

Ryan Garry

Young defender Garry made his bow in a 6-1 win against Southampton in 2003, a game best remembered for two Arsenal players scoring hat-tricks. He continued his career with Bournemouth after eventually leaving north London, but injury forced him to retired aged just 27.

Julian Gray

Gray was handed a debut in the 1999-2000 season, replacing Kanu in a late-season defeat at Newcastle. He eventually returned to the top flight with Birmingham, via a productive spell with Crystal Palace, and also had a brief foray to Cyprus before eventually retiring in 2014.

David Grondin

One of Arsenal's early French recruits, Grondin didn't have a fraction of the success of Henry, Vieira, Petit and co. The defender's only Premier League minutes came in a goalless draw with Liverpool in 1998, and he had spells in Scotland, France and Belgium after leaving Highbury,

Perry Groves

A stalwart of Arsenal's late 80s and early 90s sides, Groves played more than 100 times for the Gunners before the advent of the Premier League. Six minutes against Blackburn was all he managed in the 1992-93 season, though, with a move to Southampton coming not long after as he entered the twilight of his career.

Lee Harper

An erstwhile back-up goalkeeper, Harper couldn't find a way past David Seaman in the Gunners goal but did keep a clean sheet at Southampton in his only Premier League appearance for any club. The stopper racked up more than 200 Football League appearances after moving on, though, with the bulk of them coming for QPR and Northampton.

Gavin Hoyte

While older brother Justin played more than 30 Premier League games for the Gunners, all Gavin managed was an hour against Manchester City in November 2008. Now 32, the Trinidad & Tobago international defender is playing non-league football for Maidstone after stints with the likes of Dagenham & Redbridge and Barnet in the lower leagues.

Li Ke

Known as Nico Yennaris in his Arsenal days, Li Ke now goes by his Chinese name and made his senior international debut for China in 2019. The Leytonstone-born defender plays his club football for Beijing Guoan, having been thrown in by Arsenal in a Premier League defeat to Man Utd back in January 2012.

Arturo Lupoli

A highly-rated attacking talent when he joined from Parma as a teenager, Lupoli netted in the League Cup in his first season with Arsenal but managed just eight minutes and no goals in the league. The Brescia-born forward carved out a solid career for himself in the Italian lower leagues, retiring in 2022 after finishing his career with Serie D side Imperia.

Brian McGovern

McGovern made his debut in the same Newcastle game as Gray, at the tail end of the 1999-2000 season, and you'll hear about the third debutant from that game later on. An Ireland under-21 international, the defender spent time with Norwich and Peterborough before returning to his home country, making his last recorded appearance in 2006.

Ryo Miyaichi

Japan youth international Miyaichi arrived with plenty of hype in 2011, and was given a taste of Premier League football with loan spells at Bolton and Wigan before making his one and only Arsenal league appearance against Stoke in 2013. He returned to Japan in 2021 after a six-year stint in Germany with St Pauli, and won his first international caps in a full decade earlier this year.

Ethan Nwaneri

Nwaneri is one of two young men on this list who will hope his first Arsenal appearance - against Brentford earlier this season at the age of just 15 - won't be his last. "He is such a big talent we want to keep with us," manager Mikel Arteta said after handing the teenager his debut.

Marquinhos

Like Nwaneri, Marquinhos will hope to add to his sole Premier League outing, which came in the same game. The summer signing has already played and scored in the Europa League, netting in a group stage victory against FC Zurich, and has impressed enough to earn more minutes in Europe since.

Park Chu-young

Park joined Arsenal in 2011 off the back of some impressive seasons with Monaco and scored in the League Cup in his second Gunners appearance, but his only minutes in the league came against United in the same game which saw Li Ke make his bow. The forward returned to his homeland in 2015 via a season in Saudi Arabia, and is now playing his club football for Ulsan Hyundai.

Mart Poom

Signed as goalkeeper cover, Estonia international Poom joined from Sunderland, initially on loan, and kept Portsmouth at bay in a goalless draw at the end of the 2006-07 season. The well-travelled stopper was already 35 at the time, and retired two years later to become a goalkeeping coach for his national team, and his son Markus made a senior Estonia bow in 2019.

Isaiah Rankin

London-born forward Rankin made his debut against Spurs in 1997 after impressing out on loan, but didn't add to the four minutes he earned as a late replacement for Nicolas Anelka. Bradford swooped with a £1.3m bid, and he played a handful of Premier League games for the Yorkshire clubs before dropping down the leagues and eventually calling it quits in 2014.

Runar Alex Runarsson

Runarsson is still on Arsenal's books but looks unlikely to add to his one Premier League outing, which came from the bench after starting goalkeeper Bernd Leno was sent off against Wolves in 2021. The Iceland international is currently out on loan at Alanyaspor, who sit in mid-table in the Turkish Super Lig.

Stathis Tavlaridis

Greek defender Tavlaridis joined Arsenal from Iraklis Salonika in 2001, and made his Premier League debut in the aforementioned 6-1 win against Southampton at the age of 23. The centre-back had an alright time of things after leaving for Lille, famously starting in a Champions League win against Manchester United, while he replaced future Gunners man Sokratis in his final international cap in 2015.

Rhys Weston

The third debutant to play his only Arsenal league game against Newcastle in 2000, Weston made his senior Wales debut just weeks later. A six-figure move to Cardiff followed before the end of the calendar year, and he played more than 200 games for the Bluebirds before going on his travels, playing in Norway, Iceland and Malaysia during a colourful career.
