The U.S. Women's National Team became champions of the Concacaf W Tournament after defeating Canada 1-0 at BBVA Stadium in Monterrey, Mexico, securing a place in the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.
With a solitary goal by Alex Morgan, they were able to defeat their 'Maple Leaf' counterparts, who for most of the game held off the powerful USWNT offense.
USWNT dominated the first half
The game between the United States and Canada was a complete spectacle, after the first few minutes of play were filled with clear scoring opportunities.
The first came just as the clock was ticking down to the first minute of play. Mallory Pugh volleyed a shot with her right foot, but Kailen Sheridan kept the shot out of her net.
Minutes later, the United States continued to bombard, and in the third minute Alex Morgan came within inches of giving her team the lead with a shot inside the box that went just wide.
Canada did not give up despite the great opponent they had in front of them and it was Nichele Prince, who had a strong shot that went over the crossbar, after a defensive deflection.
However, the offensive power of the United States did not stop the onslaught and it was Kailen Sheridan who had to save again in the 31st minute and the 44th minute. The respective saves ensured that the first half ended in a scoreless draw.
The only goal came in the second half
In the second half, Canada gained more control of the ball, although their players were unable to stop the fast attack of the USWNT led by Alex Morgan.
In this case, the U.S. had two clear chances that they were unable to score, the first of them was a clear miss by Sophia Smith with the goal open at 64', while the second scoring chance happened a minute later, with a cross from Alex Morgan that went near the left post.
However, the goal came for the United States, after several attempts, although it was thanks to a penalty kick that they were able to end Canada's undefeated record.
In the 77th minute, Alex Morgan scored from the penalty spot with a left-footed shot to the right side that Canadian goalkeeper Kailen Sheridan did not expect.
With this 1-0 result at the BBVA Stadium in Monterrey, the United States won the CONCACAF W Championship for the ninth time in its history.
