Three Premier League managers 'run for cover' as tropical storm hits Washington

Extreme weather conditions in the United States capital of Washington, DC forced Premier League managers to seek shelter.

Aston Villa, Fulham and Brentford have travelled across the pond for their respective pre-season tours.

All three sides have been competing in the Premier League Summer Series alongside Chelsea, Newcastle and Brighton.

Washington DC is the latest destination for four of the clubs, with two matches set to be played on Sunday.

However, a tropical storm hit the east coast of the United States on Saturday with high winds and heavy rains causing havoc.

Unai Emery, Thomas Frank and Marco Silva were guests at a garden party being held at the British Embassy.

Sky Sports reporter Keith Downie reports that they had to run for cover as the storm hit, although luckily no one was hurt.

He also said that for safety reasons, Chelsea boss Mauricio Pochettino had to 're-route to team hotel' and cancelled his press conference.

Downie described the rain in the capital as 'biblical', with winds reaching speeds of 80mph.

A video shows one huge tree uprooted as a result of the storm, with branches and leaves scattered across the road.

It appears that the weather has now cleared up though, with sunshine forecast for the rest of Sunday.

Villa take on Brentford at the FedEx Field at 17:00 UK time before Chelsea face Fulham at 19:45 at the same stadium.

The Villains, the Blues and the Cottagers could all get their hands on the Premier League Summer Series by the end of the weekend.

Regardless of the results, performances against similar top flight opposition will provide them with great preparation for the new season.
