Things you missed at Man Utd vs Arsenal including Ronaldo's response to Rangnick

mirror.co.uk, 2 December 2021, 22:14
Ralf Rangnick won't be in the Manchester United dugout until the weekend against Crystal Palace, but Cristiano Ronaldo certainly gave him some food for thought ahead of his first game in charge

Cristiano Ronaldo put on a show for Ralf Rangnick who was in the stands for Manchester United's win over Arsenal.

The interim boss won't be in the dugout until the weekend against Crystal Palace, but the players certainly gave him some food for thought ahead of his first game in charge.

Michael Carrick made it three games undefeated as caretaker manager with a brace from Ronaldo sealing the 3-2 victory.

Emile Smith Rowe put the visitors in front before Bruno Fernandes equalised before the break.

Ronaldo put United ahead, before Martin Odegaard quickly replied to level things up once again.

But Ronaldo got the final say once again with the resulting winner from the penalty spot after Odegaard fouled Fred in the area.

Here are a few moments missed from the Premier League clash at Old Trafford.

Ronaldo's response to Rangnick

There have been concerns that Ronaldo wouldn't have a future under Rangnick as he wouldn't be suited to the German's high pressing style of football.

But the forward provided an emphatic response to those claims by once again showing how indispensable he is to United.

He scored another two goals becoming the first-ever player to reach 800 career goals.

Ronaldo might have to meet Ragnick in the middle somewhat, but tonight showed that the United boss also needs to compromise his methods for one of the greatest players of all time.

Rashford's body language

It wasn't the best day at the office for Marcus Rashford and he let his frustrations boil over during the first half.

During the first half, he lashed out at Bruno Fernandes for not making an overlapping return on the right-hand side, before having a go at Diogo Dalot for failing to control the ball as it ran out of play.

Ally McCoist noticed Rashford's outburst on commentary duty.

He said: "I'm not sure that's ideal body language when Dalot miscontrols it."

Cristiano Ronaldo's glare at Bruno Fernandes

Up until Fernandes' equaliser on the stroke of half time, it was a disappointing first period for United.

The hosts weren't getting much joy at the top end of the pitch and players were starting to get on each other's backs.

Fernandes tried to play Cristiano Ronaldo through on goal, but there was a mix-up as his compatriot came short instead of running in behind.

Fernandes threw his hands up in the air in frustration as Ronaldo stared back at him as if his teammate was to blame for the breakdown in communication.

But the pair settled their differences in the second half as the pair were instrumental in sealing the victory.

Fernandes' telling celebration

Fernandes netted his first goal in 15 matches for United as he finished off a free-flowing move to get the Red Devils on level terms.

Jadon Sancho played an incisive through ball to Fred who intuitively flicked the ball behind him for Fernandes to fire the ball into the bottom corner past Aaron Ramsdale.

The midfielder expressed his concern before kick-off that he isn't a player who typically plays in a Ralf Rangnick side, but vowed to try and be the "perfect player" for the new manager.

Asked if he is Rangnick's type of player, he said: "I hope so. Everyone wants to be the perfect player to the manager, you know?"

"From everything I've heard about him [Rangnick], he's a person everyone respects in the world of football. He's a really good manager. He's offensive, he likes to press high. He's intense. I like that, I'm an intense player."

And he showed that intensity in his celebrations as he broke that baron run in front of goal.

Rangnick's muted reaction

It's fair to say that Rangnick's celebration was not quite as energetic as Fernandes'.

The TV cameras panned to the interim boss after the playmaker's strike hit the net, but the German was almost expressionless, similar to his reaction to Arsenal's opener.

There were claims that Rangnick had some influence in Michael Carrick's team selection despite not being in the dugout, but either way United are going in the right direction with three games unbeaten since Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's departure.
