Solskjaer would have been fearing the worst after watching his side go 1-0 down against Villarreal, having also lost their opening Champions League group game to Young Boys.
The Spanish side were the better team for large parts, but an Alex Telles wonder goal and Ronaldo winner saw them come away with a 2-1 win.
Solskjaer even admitted after the game that his side got lucky and they really did.
With no Aaron Wan-Bissaka, Harry Maguire or Luke Shaw in the side the defence looked all at sea.
David De Gea was forced into making a number of brilliant saves.
But of course if had to fall to Ronaldo in the dying minutes to grab a winner and lift some of the pressure on Solskjaer.
Back-to-back losses had put increased scrutiny on the United boss and a third straight would have put him under yet more heat.
Reacting to the game, talkSPORT host Jason Cundy said: "That first half, they were just excellent. They got everything right. They were defensively organised and created chances.
"Dalot, wow. He got terrorised, but when you've got someone like Ronaldo you've always got a chance.
"Whatever you think about Ronaldo, you've got to say he's just sublime in those situations.
"If you want one man for that to fall to, one man on the planet you want it to fall to, and he happened to be there in that position and United got it."
Sports Bar co-host Jamie O'Hara admitted that Solskjaer was one lucky man after seeing his side snatch three points.
O'Hara said: "Ole Gunnar Solskajer got away with it. He is living on eggshells right now because Villarreal should have won that game 4-1, they battered Man United.
"They have four or five clear cut chances. David De Gea was incredible."
Cundy added: "He's produced some great saves there. You need a little bit of good fortune. He made a save towards the end when it was 1-1, he parried it back in to one of the Villarreal player's chests and he just sticks out a big paw and saves it.
"He was brilliant, but United were shambolic.
"The victory is the most important thing, but if I was a United fan I would be saying it is papering over the cracks."
