Solskjaer admits Liverpool drubbing is his "darkest day" as Man Utd manager

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer confessed Manchester United have hit "rock bottom" as he lamented his "darkest day" in the Old Trafford hot seat.

The Red Devils were trounced 5-0 by Liverpool on Sunday evening, with the visitors surging to a 4-0 lead by half-time, Paul Pogba sent off and boos ringing around the Theatre of Dreams at the full-time whistle.

United also lost in the Premier League by a five-goal margin last season when they were beaten 6-1 by Tottenham Hotspur, but Solskjaer claims the defeat by the Reds was "miles worse".

The result means United have failed to win any of their last four top-flight fixtures and leaves them seventh in the table.

Solskjaer did not try and mask the pain of an embarrassing loss to arch-rivals Liverpool but urged his side to "get over it as quick as we can".

"It is the darkest day I have had leading these players," Solskjaer told Sky Sports in a post-match interview. "Not good enough individually or as a team.

"The coaching staff are very good, brilliant, and I choose the way we approach the game. Today we were not clinical enough going forward and when you give good players spaces they score.

"We lost 6-1 to Spurs last season but this is miles worse. We have to get over it as quick as we can and move on. We are at rock bottom, we cannot feel any worse than this."

He added: "We have big games coming up, so no time to sulk, no time to feel sorry for yourself. We have to come together."

Meanwhile, Solskjaer's counterpart Jurgen Klopp said he sympathises with the under-fire Norwegian as he recalled the pain of derby defeats.

"I said before the last thing I want to be is in his shoes in this moment," said the Reds boss. "That is how it is when you lose a derby, that has happened to me, you don't want to go out and answer these questions."

Klopp also hailed an "insane result" which restored his side to second in the Premier League table, one point behind leaders Chelsea.

"It is special but we don't celebrate like crazy, we have respect for the opponents," said the German. "At half-time I told the players: we've to play better."

He added: "This group always wanted to write their own chapters in the history book of this club and today that's a chapter."
