Sheffield United vs Crystal Palace LIVE: Date, kick-off time and team news

talksport.com, 12 August 2023, 10:53
Sheffield United start their return to the Premier League with a home clash against Crystal Palace this weekend.

The Blades finished second in the Championship to seal promotion but have endured a tumultuous summer.

Paul Heckingbottom has seen four of his best players leave, while there have only been five first-team additions.

Meanwhile, their opponents have lost Wilfried Zaha, while Michael Olise and Vicente Guaita might not be around for too much longer.

So three points here for either side could prove absolutely crucial come the end of the season, as both teams look set for a potential relegation battle.

Sheffield United vs Crystal Palace: Date and how to follow

This Premier League clash is set to take place on Saturday, August 12.

Kick-off at Bramall Lane is scheduled for 3pm.

Unfortunately, this fixture will not be televised on UK screens due to the 3pm blackout in English football.

However, highlights will be available on the Sky Sports website and app shortly after the end of the match and then later on Match of the Day.

talkSPORT will have updates from Bramall Lane as part of GameDay Live from 3pm.

Sheffield United vs Crystal Palace

The Blades have a severely depleted squad and are likely to be without Daniel Jebbison and Oli McBurnie due to a groin issue and bruised foot.

The hosts will also not be able to call on the services of John Fleck, Jayden Bogle, Ismaila Coulibaly and Rhian Brewster.

But there could be debuts for all of the Blades' new signings, with Anis Slimane, Benie Traore, Auston Trusty, Vinicius Souza and Yasser Larouci in contention.

Meanwhile, the Eagles won't have Olise due to a hamstring tear.

Will Hughes and new man Matheus Franca are also set to miss out.

But Tyrick Mitchell should be fit to start at left-back for Roy Hodgson's men.

In terms of debuts, Jeferson Lerma is likely to start after joining from Bournemouth on a free.

Sheffield United vs Crystal Palace: What has been said?

Blades boss Heckingbottom has urged the club to make some late signings.

He said: "Prince Abdullah [Abdullah Bin Mossad Al Saud] has assured me that money's there to spend so we need to go and spend it.

"I'm not going to speak about players' names but you only have to watch us train and we have got a lot of young boys in our group.

"From November 21 (2022) when we took over, we've lost 18 players from the first-team squad and got six in. Forget the quality, we are 12 bodies light.

"We've done a lot of good work to replace that with boys from the academy but we've also sold a lot of talent from the academy.

"We're desperately light regardless.

Sheffield United vs Crystal Palace: Match facts

Sheffield United have lost just one of their last five home league games against Crystal Palace (W3 D1), though it was their last such meeting in May 2021 (0-2).

All six Premier League meetings between Sheffield United and Crystal Palace have seen the winning team keep a clean sheet - the Eagles won both meetings in both 1992-93 and 2020-21, while the Blades won both in 2019-20.

Between December 2006 and July 2020, Sheffield United won 10 consecutive Premier League home games against London sides. However, they failed to win any of their six such games in their last top-flight campaign of 2020-21, losing each of the last five in a row (D1).

Sheffield United have won their opening league game in just one of the last nine seasons (D1 L7), beating Brentford 1-0 in 2017-18. They've lost their last three in a row, only once having a longer such run (4 between 1928-29 and 1931-32).

Crystal Palace have lost their opening league game in each of the last two seasons (0-3 v Chelsea, 0-2 v Arsenal). They've never done so in three consecutive top-flight campaigns before.

Sheffield United won their opening match in each of their first two Premier League campaigns but have failed to do so in any of their subsequent three (D2 L1).

Last season, only Manchester City (17) won more home league games than Sheffield United (16) in the top two tiers of English football. The Blades have won 11 of their last 13 at Bramall Lane (L2).

None of Sheffield United's last 24 games in the Premier League have ended level (W7 L17), the longest current ongoing run without a draw in the competition.

Crystal Palace finished the 2022-23 season with a game against each of the three promoted sides (Bournemouth, Fulham and Nottingham Forest). By facing Sheffield United in this game, the Eagles are the first side to have four consecutive top-flight games against promoted sides since Arsenal in November 1991.

Crystal Palace's Eberechi Eze has been involved in four goals in his last four league games against Sheffield United, finding the net in both of his Premier League games against them. Against no side has he either scored (3) or been involved in (4) more league goals than against the Blades.
