Saturday's FA Cup predictions including Walsall vs. Charlton Athletic

sportsmole.co.uk, 30 November 2024, 06:50
Wealdstone vs. Wycombe (Saturday, 11.30am)

National League Wealdstone will look to spring a surprise when they welcome League One Wycombe Wanderers for Saturday's FA Cup second-round tie.

The hosts beat League Two Grimsby Town in the first round, while the Chairboys saw off York City to get their FA Cup journey up and running.

We say: Wealdstone 1-3 Wycombe Wanderers

Bloomfield is likely to rotate his side for Saturday's cup tie, but his team should still have enough quality to get the better of National League Wealdstone to claim an 11th consecutive victory in all competitions.

Salford City vs. Cheltenham (Saturday, 3.00pm)

Salford City will face a League Two side in the FA Cup second round when they welcome Cheltenham Town to the Peninsula Stadium on Saturday.

The Ammies sealed their place in round two with a win over Shrewsbury, while the Robins kicked off their FA Cup campaign with a successful outing against Rotherham United.

We say: Salford City 2-1 Cheltenham Town

Salford have won three of their previous four competitive home matches against Cheltenham, and we think they will enjoy more home success on Saturday, especially as they will take confidence from the fact they have already beaten the Robins at the Peninsula Stadium this season, claiming a narrow win when the two sides faced off in September.

Walsall vs. Charlton (Saturday, 3.00pm)

Looking to book a spot in the third round of the competition, Walsall and Charlton Athletic will clash for a match in the second round of the FA Cup at Poundland Bescot Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

The Saddlers are enjoying a sensational start to their League Two campaign, whilst the Addicks are struggling to reach the heights of the third tier so far.

We say: Walsall 2-1 Charlton Athletic

After beating third-tier Bolton in the previous round of the FA Cup, high-flying Walsall should be very confident of repeating the trick against Charlton.

The Addicks are on the road for the third time in the space of eight days, and we feel that Jones's men will run out of legs in the West Midlands.

Exeter vs. Chesterfield (Saturday, 3.00pm)

League One Exeter City will welcome fourth-tier Chesterfield to St James Park for Saturday's FA Cup second-round clash.

The hosts saw off Barnet to seal their place in the round two, while the visitors got their FA Cup journey up and running with a win over Horsham.

We say: Exeter City 1-2 Chesterfield

Chesterfield may be competing in the league below Exeter, but they have enough quality in their squad to compete with their League One hosts, and after winning three of their previous five away games, we think the Spireites could produce another strong away performance to claim a narrow victory.

Leyton Orient vs. Oldham (Saturday, 3.00pm)

Leyton Orient and Oldham Athletic square off on Saturday afternoon looking to book their place in the FA Cup third round.

At a time when the home side sit in 21st position in League One, Oldham occupy fourth spot in the National League table.

We say: Leyton Orient 2-0 Oldham Athletic

Given their contrasting league positions, this has the potential to be a hard-fought contest. Nevertheless, we feel that Orient's greater quality will eventually shine through, potentially during the second half.

Barnsley vs. Bristol Rovers (Saturday, 3.00pm)

Bristol Rovers will travel to Oakwell for the second time this season on Saturday to take on Barnsley with an FA Cup third-round place on the line.

The hosts got the better of their visitors in the previous meeting in September and sit six points better off in League One.

We say: Barnsley 2-1 Bristol Rovers

While Barnsley's momentum has slowed in recent weeks, they still have the quality to pick up another home victory against Bristol Rovers to progress to the third round of the FA Cup even if both sides opt to rotate for the tie.

Accrington vs. Swindon (Saturday, 3.00pm)

Two teams near the bottom of League Two face off in the second round of the FA Cup this weekend as Accrington Stanley host Swindon Town at Wham Stadium.

With Premier League and Championship clubs entering the cup in the third round, both sides will have significant motivation to secure their place in the draw for the next stage of the competition.

We say: Accrington Stanley 2-1 Swindon Town

Accrington have a habit of scoring goals against the visitors, a trend we expect to continue in the cup this weekend.

There are a lot of issues both on and off the pitch at Swindon at the moment, so we think Accrington will edge a tight encounter.

Crawley vs. Lincoln (Saturday, 3.00pm)

Crawley Town and Lincoln City will face off at the Broadfield Stadium this weekend, with a coveted spot in the third round of the FA Cup at stake.

Both clubs have enjoyed memorable runs in the competition in the past and will be hoping to replicate it again this season.

We say: Crawley Town 1-0 Lincoln City

This game is a tough one to call, but Lincoln have already lost here this season in the league and are out of form heading into the tie.

Crawley have shown signs of improvement under Elliot and will be feeling positive after their recent 1-0 win against Rotherham, therefore we are picking them to win this game by the same score.

Stevenage vs. Mansfield (Saturday, 3.00pm)

Stevenage welcome Mansfield Town to the Lamex Stadium in an all-League One affair in the second round of the FA Cup on Saturday.

The two sides have already met this season, with Stevenage coming out on top, beating the Stags 1-0 at the One Call Stadium last month.

We say: Stevenage 1-2 Mansfield Town

Stevenage may have won the league fixture last month, but they have not won in 90 minutes since, losing three and drawing four, including against lower-league opponents.

Mansfield have a great record away to Boro, and not much should be assumed from their recent losing run, given the level of opposition they faced, so they will fancy themselves to arrest that run and reach the third round here.

Peterborough vs. Notts County (Saturday, 3.00pm)

Having both fought back to record emphatic round one victories in the FA Cup, Peterborough United and Notts County prepare for battle at the Weston Homes Stadium in the second round on Saturday afternoon.

The Posh produced a terrific turnaround to conquer Newport County 4-2 in their opener, while their visitors demolished Alfreton Town 5-1 despite conceding early.

We say: Peterborough United 2-0 Notts County

Reading aside, Peterborough have been breaching nets for fun over the past few weeks and should need no second invitation to capitalise on Notts County's patchy form and ongoing selection woes.

There ought to be no FA Cup shocks or barnstorming comebacks at the Weston Homes Stadium, where Peterborough have our vote to comfortably advance to round three, most likely with a long-awaited clean sheet.

Stockport vs. Brackley Town (Saturday, 3.00pm)

Bidding for a place in club history, National League North side Brackley Town will visit Stockport County in the FA Cup second round on Saturday.

While Brackley are looking to reach the third round for the very first time, their hosts have not made it through to that stage for 22 years.

We say: Stockport County 3-1 Brackley Town

Even if Stockport decide to rotate their squad, prioritising their promotion push over the FA Cup, they should have sufficient depth to see off Brackley's challenge and book a place in the third round.

Morecambe vs. Bradford (Saturday, 3.00pm)

Morecambe will welcome Bradford City to the Mazuma Mobile Stadium on Saturday for an FA Cup second-round tie.

The two sides have already met in Lancashire this season, with a League Two contest ending in a goalless stalemate.

We say: Morecambe 1-2 Bradford City

Bradford are yet to kick into gear this season and failed to get over the line when these sides met earlier on in the campaign, but they do still have the required quality and should back themselves to progress with a win in Lancashire.

Cambridge vs. Wigan (Saturday, 3.00pm)

In the second round of the FA Cup, Garry Monk's Cambridge United are set to host League One rivals Wigan Athletic at Cledara Abbey Stadium on Saturday.

In the first round, relegation-threatened Cambridge won 1-0 away to National League side Woking, while Wigan travelled to League Two Carlisle United and won 2-0.

We say: Cambridge United 1-2 Wigan Athletic

Both sides will be keen to reach the third round of the FA Cup, when Premier League teams enter the competition, so expect a close tie between two of the lowest-scoring sides in League One.

However, Wigan enter the game with confidence after recording consecutive league wins, and their superior defensive record may see them win by a small margin.

AFC Wimbledon vs. Dag & Red (Saturday, 7.15pm)

In the second round of the FA Cup, League Two AFC Wimbledon are set to host National League side Dagenham & Redbridge on Saturday at The Cherry Red Records Stadium.

In the last round, Wimbledon won 2-0 away to fierce rivals MK Dons, while the Daggers were victorious in their away trip to League Two's Crewe Alexandra.

We say: AFC Wimbledon 2-1 Dagenham & Redbridge

Due to the stakes and the potential of playing a Premier League side in the next round, expect this game to be a hard-fought affair.

However, while Dagenham & Redbridge beat League Two opposition in the last round of the FA Cup, Wimbledon may prove too much for the mid-table National League side to handle.
