Saturday's FA Cup predictions including Manchester United vs. Reading

sportsmole.co.uk, 28 January 2023, 06:00
Walsall vs. Leicester (Saturday, 12.30pm)

League Two's form side Walsall will endeavour to pull off an FA Cup giant killing when Leicester City make the journey to Banks's Stadium for the fourth round on Saturday lunchtime.

Michael Flynn's men defeated Stockport County to progress to round four, while the Foxes ran out 1-0 winners over Gillingham in their previous encounter.

We say: Walsall 1-3 Leicester City

Walsall have been a force to be reckoned with during the winter period and can feel optimistic of breaching a shaky Leicester backline - especially a makeshift one.

However, the Foxes demonstrated a vastly-improved attacking display in the visit of Brighton and should not be in any danger of suffering a shock exit on Saturday.

Accrington vs. Leeds (Saturday, 12.30pm)

League One side Accrington Stanley play host to Premier League outfit Leeds United at the Wham Stadium in the fourth round of the FA Cup on Saturday.

The hosts are looking to reach the fifth round for the first time in their history, while the visitors are seeking to advance to the same stage for the first time since the 2015-16 campaign under former boss Steve Evans.

We say: Accrington Stanley 1-3 Leeds United

Coleman will be hoping that his Accrington side relish the opportunity of going toe-to-toe with Leeds as they bid to pull off a giant-killing in front of their home supporters and the TV cameras at the Wham Stadium.

However, Leeds will be confident of replicating their clinical showing against Cardiff when they travel to Lancashire, and they should have few problems progressing to the fifth round.

Southampton vs. Blackpool (Saturday, 3.00pm)

Facing their second of three successive cup matches, Southampton welcome Blackpool to St Mary's Stadium for the fourth round of the FA Cup on Saturday afternoon.

Nathan Jones's men battled past Crystal Palace 2-1 in the third round to make it this far, while the Tangerines thumped Nottingham Forest 4-1.

We say: Southampton 2-1 Blackpool

Southampton have bigger fish to fry in the Premier League and EFL Cup at the moment, and a classic case of new manager bounce cannot come quickly enough for a woeful Blackpool side.

The Tangerines may have taught Forest a footballing lesson in the third round, but their dismal streak of form makes it difficult to predict a shock result here, and a rotated Southampton team should do just about enough to progress.

Ipswich vs. Burnley (Saturday, 3.00pm)

Burnley will be attempting to continue their remarkable season when they meet Ipswich Town in the FA Cup fourth round on Saturday afternoon.

At a time when the Clarets sit 18 points clear of third place in the Championship, Ipswich occupy third spot in League One.

We say: Ipswich Town 1-2 Burnley

Having gotten back to winning ways in the league, Ipswich will be confident of building on that versus the Championship leaders. Nevertheless, we cannot back any EFL team against Burnley right now, leading us to predict a narrow victory for the visitors.

Luton vs. Grimsby Town (Saturday, 3.00pm)

League Two outfit Grimsby Town make the trip to Kenilworth Road to face Championship side Luton Town in the fourth round of the FA Cup on Saturday.

The Hatters required a replay to edge past Wigan Athletic in the previous round, while the Mariners have beaten League One trio Plymouth Argyle, Cambridge United and Burton Albion en route to the fourth round.

We say: Luton Town 2-0 Grimsby Town

Luton have won each of their last 16 FA Cup ties as a Football League club against teams from a lower division, and they will be regarded as favourites to come out on top on Saturday.

Grimsby, meanwhile, have struggled away from home in recent weeks, losing five of their last six matches on the road, and another defeat could be on the cards at Kenilworth Road.

Sheff Weds vs. Fleetwood (Saturday, 3.00pm)

After squaring off in League One last weekend, Sheffield Wednesday and Fleetwood Town will again do battle at Hillsborough on Saturday with a place if the FA Cup round of 16 on the line.

The hosts came out on top in that contest to remain second in England's third tier and saw their scheduled trip to Cheltenham Town postponed on Tuesday, while their visitors were in action after their defeat in South Yorkshire and lost 2-0 to Portsmouth in midweek.

We say: Sheffield Wednesday 2-0 Fleetwood Town

Sheffield Wednesday were not quite at their best in last week's triumph over the Cod Army, and with a round-of-16 place on the line on this occasion, we see their superior squad being slightly more dominant and again prevailing on home turf.

Fulham vs. Sunderland (Saturday, 3.00pm)

A place in the fifth round of the FA Cup is on the line when Fulham host Sunderland at Craven Cottage on Saturday afternoon.

The Cottagers defeated Hull City 2-0 to book their place in round four, while the Black Cats posted a 2-1 victory away to Shrewsbury Town.

We say: Fulham 2-0 Sunderland

A Sunderland side with a taste for goals undoubtedly possess the tools to hurt Fulham, but the hosts are rarely overwhelmed defensively and have far fewer injury concerns to worry about here.

Even if things do go pear-shaped, Silva is blessed with several high-quality options off the bench, and we can only picture the Cottagers marching onto the fifth round.

Bristol City vs. West Brom (Saturday, 3.00pm)

Bristol City and West Bromwich Albion meet in the FA Cup fourth round on Saturday afternoon as they take a break from Championship commitments.

Seven places and eight points separate them in the second-tier standings, the visitors sitting in 10th spot and their hosts down in 17th position.

We say: Bristol City 1-1 West Bromwich Albion

While West Brom are the favourites for this fixture, Bristol City have as much chance of posting a noteworthy result against an in-form team as they have had all season. With that in mind, do not be surprised to see a low-scoring draw play out and a replay be scheduled for The Hawthorns.

Blackburn vs. Birmingham (Saturday, 3.00pm)

Blackburn Rovers and Birmingham City take a break from Championship action on Saturday afternoon as they square off at Ewood Park in the FA Cup fourth round.

The two clubs are currently enduring contrasting seasons, with Rovers sitting in fourth in the standings and Blues just six points above the relegation zone.

We say: Blackburn Rovers 2-0 Birmingham City

While Blues boosted their confidence with a win over Forest Green in the previous round, we cannot ignore their form at the second tier. Although Blackburn have been far from perfect themselves, they should have enough quality in their ranks to record a relatively comfortable win.

Preston vs. Spurs (Saturday, 6.00pm)

Tottenham Hotspur's quest for a first trophy in over 15 years continues with a trip to Deepdale on Saturday evening, as Preston North End lie in wait for the fourth round of the FA Cup.

The hosts defeated Huddersfield 3-1 to book their spot in round four, while Spurs edged past Portsmouth 1-0 in North London earlier this month.

We say: Preston North End 0-2 Tottenham Hotspur

A spate of attacking injuries does not bode well for Preston, whose home form has left a lot to be desired throughout the campaign, and we cannot envisage an FA Cup shock occurring at Deepdale.

Conte's Tottenham are not exactly invincible right now, but a crucial win at Fulham would have done wonders for the morale in the camp, and the Lilywhites should keep their hopes of glory alive with a professional performance and routine win.

Man Utd vs. Reading (Saturday, 8.00pm)

Twelve-time FA Cup winners Manchester United welcome Championship outfit Reading to Old Trafford for a fourth-round tie on Saturday night.

The Red Devils secured a 3-1 victory over Everton in the third round to set up a contest with the Royals, who beat fellow second-tier side Watford 2-0 on home soil.

We say: Manchester United 3-0 Reading

Man United will be regarded as firm favourites to progress to the fifth round, even if Ten Hag does decide to rest a number of first-team regulars.

Ince will hope that his Reading side rise to the occasion at Old Trafford, but coming out on top against the Premier League giants seems a tall order, with a routine win on the cards for the Red Devils.
