Sadio Mane makes Crystal Palace joke after breaking record with Anfield strike

Liverpool favourite Sadio Mane sealed his place in the Premier League history books after he broke a new record during the 3-0 home win over Crystal Palace on Saturday.

The Senegal international not only notched his 100th goal for the club in just 224 appearances, but his 43rd minute strike ensured he bagged a goal against the Eagles for the ninth successive game - a new Premier League record, breaking Robin van Persie's previous of eight in a row vs Stoke City.

After the game, Mane quipped he would enjoy playing against Patrick Vieira's side every weekend, telling BBC Sport : "I would love to play against Crystal Palace. I am lucky. It would be great to play them every single weekend.

"In my head I am always thinking it is possible. I will keep trying and trying and trying.

"I am lucky to score so many goals against Palace. Most important thing was the three points. Right place, right time. I am lucky. And happy. Thank you to all the fans, club and staff. Without them I am nothing."

The win continues Liverpool's unbeaten start to the Premier League season, their only dropped points coming during the 1-1 home draw with title rivals Chelsea.

When pressed on what he makes of the title race and the sides involved, Mane explained: "I think people are not wrong saying Manchester City, Chelsea and Manchester United as well for the title. We will try to be our best and at that level."

Mane's delight after the win was echoed by his manager Jurgen Klopp, who described the game as one of the most hard-fought victories.

"It is one of the most hard-fought 3-0s ever. We had to give everything. Hard but fair challenges. Physicality was immense and we had to be ready.

"The chips in behind our full-backs gave us trouble. The longer it went they used that more and more. We had to run.

"The Wednesday/Saturday rhythm is really hard. We scored wonderful goals and used our set-pieces. It is massive in games like this. These are the games you have to win, when you are not brilliant."

The win sees Liverpool return to the top of the Premier League, though with Chelsea, Manchester United and local rivals Everton still all to play, the Reds could still finish this match-week as low as fourth.

Klopp's side now gear up for three successive away trips in three different competitions, the first coming in the Carabao Cup at Carrow Road to take on a Norwich side they have already brushed aside once this season.

Liverpool then travel to newly-promoted outfit Brentford in the league, before making the trip to Portugal where they will meet Porto in match-week 2 of the Champions League.
