Rubiales suspended by FIFA and Spanish FA told not to contact Hermoso after legal threat

The fallout from Rubiales kissing Hermoso after the Women's World Cup final continues to loom over Spanish football after an astonishing series of events on Friday.

In a shocking press conference, Rubiales refused to resign as RFEF president and insisted that Hermoso consented to the kiss after Spain beat England.

However, the Pachuca star released a statement that insisted she did not consent and that the RFEF pressured her into saying that she did.

The Spanish FA condemned Hermoso and insisted that they would be taking legal action but the FIFA Disciplinary Committee has now stepped in to provisionally suspend Rubiales.

A statement read: "The chairman of the FIFA Disciplinary Committee, Jorge Ivan Palacio (Colombia), in use of the powers granted by article 51 of the FIFA Disciplinary Code (FDC), has decided today to provisionally suspend Mr. Luis Rubiales from all football-related activities at national and international level.

"This suspension, which will be effective as of today, is for an initial period of 90 days, pending the disciplinary proceedings opened against Mr. Luis Rubiales on Thursday, August 24."

It goes on to say that Rubiales or the RFEF are 'ordered to refrain' from contacting Hermoso and anyone close to her.

The RFEF had threatened to sue Hermoso on Saturday morning and said: "The evidence is conclusive. Mr President has not lied.

"The RFEF and Mr President will demonstrate each of the lies that are spread either by someone on behalf of the player or, if applicable, by the player herself.

"The RFEF and the President, given the seriousness of the content of the press release from the Futpro union, will initiate the corresponding legal actions."

The reaction to Rubiales' actions has provoked widespread condemnation from the footballing world, including from the Lionesses.

A joint statement from the England team read: "Unacceptable actions allowed to happen by a sexist and patriarchal organisation.

"Abuse is abuse and we have all seen the truth.

"The behaviour of those who think they are invincible must not be tolerated and people shouldn't need convincing to take action against any form of harassment.

"We all stand with you, @jennihermoso and all players of the Spanish team."

Rubiales insisted he would not go anywhere at an extraordinary general assembly on Friday.

He kept repeating 'I am not resigning' to applause from the audience, including from Spain men and women coaches Luis de la Fuente and Jorge Vilda.

Rubiales also went on to offer Vilda, whose coaching methods have been protested against by members of the Spain squad, a four-year contract on stage.
