Marcus Rashford, Wout Weghorst and Bruno Fernandes all scored in Manchester United's Carabao Cup semi-final first leg win against Nottingham Forest.

The Red Devils travelled to the City Ground for the first meeting between the two sides in this season's last four.

It didn't take long for Rashford to make an impact, with the 25-year-old scoring his tenth goal in as many games for United.

In the sixth minute of the game, the forward claimed possession inside his own half before charging towards the Forest defence.

Rashford proceeded to dribble past Remo Freuler and Joe Worrall before firing past Wayne Hennessey at his near post.

Speaking to talkSPORT, England legend Stuart Pearce was highly impressed with what he saw from the United man.

He said: "That was a goal from a player that's oozing confidence.

"He's picked the ball up on the halfway line, he's driven down the line with it, he's decided not to check back and play backwards like you see time and time again.

"He just kept running, Freuler comes towards him, Worrall comes towards him. He went between the two and ended up driving down that access where you think it's going to be a big problem for Forest tonight. Great goal."

Weghorst then doubled United's lead on the stroke of half-time, with the Dutchman scoring his first goal for the club as he fired into the roof of the net on the rebound.

Forest thought they had found an equaliser through Sam Surridge after Rashford's effort, but VAR ruled out his goal for offside.

However, Bruno Fernandes made it game, set and match in the latter stages with a powerful effort from inside the area.

Despite their efforts, Forest could not find a response all game and will now have to Old Trafford next week for the second leg three goals down.

The Carabao Cup final takes place at the end of February, with United one step closer to returning to Wembley for the first time since 2020.

Newcastle have the advantage against Southampton in the other semi-final tie thanks to their 1-0 win on Tuesday night at Saint Mary's.
