Ranking the 5 players who've played for both Arsenal and Liverpool in the PL

mirror.co.uk, 9 October 2022, 07:00
A number of players have played for both Arsenal and Liverpool in the Premier League over the years as the two sides meet in north London for the first time since Liverpool's win in March Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain has played for both Liverpool and Arsenal

Arsenal and Liverpool lock horns at the Emirates Stadium on Sunday afternoon with the Gunners looking to continue their impressive start to the campaign.

Mikel Arteta's side will be looking to move back to the top of the Premier League after Manchester City climbed to the summit following their rout over Southampton on Saturday. The Gunners recorded their seventh win from eight games with a 3-1 victory over Tottenham Hotspur last weekend.

Meanwhile, Liverpool have made a mixed start to the season, having won just two of their opening seven matches. They have, however, lost just one and that came against Manchester United, with Jurgen Klopp's side mounting a four-game unbeaten run in the league.

However, it is still poised to be a close game as Arsenal look to end their poor recent record against Liverpool. So, with that in mind, Mirror Football have ranked the five players who have played for both teams in the Premier League.

5. Yossi Benayoun

A well-travelled midfielder, Benayoun impressed during spells with Hapoel Be'er Sheva, Maccabi Haifa and Racing de Santander before moving to the Premier League with West Ham in 2005. The former Israel international impressed at the Hammers before joining Liverpool in 2007, where he would go on to become a cult hero.

Benayoun spent three years at the Reds, scoring 29 times in 134 matches as he signed for Chelsea in 2010. However, he struggled for form at the reigning Premier League champions, with Benayoun spending the 2011/12 at the Gunners in an attempt to get some much-needed minutes. He played 25 times for Arsenal, scoring six goals.

4. Jermaine Pennant

Having broke through as one of the most exciting teenagers in English football, Pennant earned himself a £2million move to Arsenal from Notts County in 1999 - a record for a 15-year-old at the time. Pennant's career seemed promising following his switch to the Gunners, however, he had to wait two and a half years for his Premier League debut, coming on as a late substitute against West Ham in 2002.

Pennant, who spent time out on loan at Leeds and Watford, made just 26 appearances for the Gunners before departing in 2004 to join Birmingham. The Nottingham-born winger impressed at the Blues and earned himself a move to Liverpool two years later, with Pennant signing for a fee in the region of £6.7m.

However, Pennant endured a tough time at Anfield despite a promising first season at the club and featured 81 times in three seasons before joining Real Zaragoza. He went on to play for the likes of Stoke City, Wolves and Billericay before retiring from football in 2018 at the age of 35.

3. Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain

One tipped to become the 'next Steven Gerrard', Oxlade-Chamberlain rose to prominence at Southampton and made his first-team debut at just 16 in 2010. He was named in the League One Team of the Year after a host of excellent performances which earned himself a move to Arsenal in 2011 for a fee in the region of £12m.

Oxlade-Chamberlain started his Arsenal career superbly and became a mainstay in the Gunners side, featuring 26 times in his first season at the club. However, the midfielder struggled with a host of injuries which forced him to make just 132 Premier League appearances in seven seasons, before his move to Liverpool was confirmed.

The 29-year-old's first season at the Reds was pretty spectacular, with Oxlade-Chamberlain scoring some important goals including the first against Manchester City in the Champions League quarter-final in 2018. Like his spell at the Gunners, Oxlade-Chamberlain's time at Liverpool has been plagued by injuries, with the player yet to feature this season so far.

2. Kolo Toure

The former Ivory Coast international began his professional career at Arsenal and cemented himself as a regular in the Gunners side during the 2002/03 campaign. Toure then helped Arsenal go unbeaten throughout the following season as they didn't lose for 48 matches running - a Premier League record. He donned the Gunners shirt for seven years, clocking up over 300 appearances as he joined Manchester City.

Toure won his second and final Premier League winners' medal at City in the 11/12 season with Roberto Mancini's side pipping Manchester United on the final day. However, the centre-back left City in 2013 to join Liverpool and Toure would go on to work with both Brendan Rodgers and Jurgen Klopp during his time at Anfield. Toure, who played 71 times for the Reds during his three years at the club, finished his career at Celtic.

1. Nicolas Anelka

A prolific forward, many forget that Anelka actually represented both of these clubs in his career with the Frenchman most known for his spell at Chelsea. Anelka started his career at PSG before moving to the Gunners in 1997, where he would partner Ian Wright to make a formidable strike force. He scored 28 times in 90 appearances for Arsenal, before joining Real Madrid in 1999.

Anelka spent just a season at Los Blancos and returned to PSG upon the turn of the century. He was loaned out to Liverpool in December 2001 for the remainder of the season and contributed to Liverpool's late push to come second in the division, scoring five goals in 20 matches. The 43-year-old featured for four more Premier League clubs in his career, donning the likes of Manchester City, Bolton and Chelsea, totally over 100 goals in the English game.
