Ralf Rangnick rates Dean Henderson's first game under Man Utd's interim boss

Manchester United interim manager Ralf Rangnick was pleased with Dean Henderson's Champions League display against Young Boys at Old Trafford on Wednesday evening

Ralf Rangnick has praised goalkeeper Dean Henderson for his performance against Young Boys on Wednesday evening.

The England international made five saves to help a youthful Manchester United team earn a 1-1 Champions League draw at Old Trafford.

The goal he conceded was a stunner from teenager Fabian Rieder, with Donny van de Beek giving away the ball in front of the box.

It was Henderson's first start under Rangnick and just his second of the season after a troubling six months for club and country.

Henderson won his first England cap and became United's first-choice goalkeeper towards the back end of last season, making 13 Premier League appearances.

Does Dean Henderson deserve more opportunities at Manchester United? Let us know in the comments below!

But a hip injury ruled him out of Gareth Southgate's squad for Euro 2020 after the first game and saw David de Gea regain his No.1 jersey at United.

Henderson has been linked with a move as a result, with Ajax and Newcastle reportedly interested in his services.

Rangnick, however, was happy with the stopper's efforts in the Champions League, offering him hope of a revival at Old Trafford.

"I fully agree," the interim manager told reporters when asked if Henderson had produced a confident display against the Swiss outfit.

"I think he almost even saved the ball that was the equaliser for Young Boys. It was only very little, one or two centimetres, that he would even save that ball.

"But of course it was a very difficult one. Apart from that he was very proactive, very present."

Rangnick was also keen to highlight Tom Heaton's efforts. The veteran goalkeeper replaced Henderson for his United debut, 19 years after first joining the club.

Heaton came through the ranks at Old Trafford but didn't make a senior appearance before signing for Cardiff in the summer of 2010.

During his first spell at United, the goalkeeper had six loan spells. He re-joined the club on a free transfer from Aston Villa in July.

"We had some conversations with the goalkeeper coaches and we decided yesterday, if at all possible, if the chronology of the game would allow it, that we wanted to give him his debut at Old Trafford today," said Rangnick.

"I didn't know that actually that he's been playing in England for such a long time, in Championship and even Premier League level.

"Apparently he even had some game time for the English team, he played for England. Obviously I wasn't aware of that so Richard our goalkeeper coach told me that.

"He's a fantastic person, very good goalkeeper, and he more than deserved that opportunity to have his debut at the age of 35."

On United's overall performance against Young Boys, Rangnick added: "I was fully aware before the game that with this team that we played today, we haven't played together as team.

"The first half hour we did quite okay. We had a few unforced errors but had control of the game. We should have been 2-0 or 3-0 up.

"We had some great opportunities but we didn't score. We were a bit sloppy with those situations... I wouldn't say I was happy but it was okay."
