sportsmole.co.uk, 5 August 2022, 22:58
The first heavyweight clash of the 2022/23 Eredivisie season sees Vitesse welcome Feyenoord to the GelreDome on Sunday in the opening round of matches.

Off the back of a third-place finish last time out, the away side will head into the upcoming campaign with renewed optimism, while their visitors seek to improve on a sixth-place finish.

Match preview

Feyenoord closed out their preparation for the new season on the back foot as they suffered a 2-1 defeat against Espanyol on Sunday at De Kuip.

Arne Slot's men fell behind to Roberto Torres's opener on the half-hour mark and after managing to draw level through Cole Bassett two minutes from time, Kike Barja popped up with a late winner in Rotterdam.

De Stadionclub have now lost four of their six pre-season friendlies and will be looking to get themselves back on track as the real action commences.

Awaiting them next is the task of facing off against an opposing side who have not come out on top in any of the previous six meetings between the teams since 2019.

Having won six of eight domestic matches on the road since the turn of the year, Sunday's visitors will fancy themselves to secure an feather in the cap away from home.

Vitesse suffered a narrow 2-1 defeat at the hands of Greek outfit Atromitos in their final warm-up encounter on Saturday evening.

Thomas Letsch's men were two goals down at the interval thanks to strikes from Viktor Klonaridis and Marios Tzavidas before Ferro pulled one back with 11 minutes left on the clock.

Consequently, the Arnhem-based side have now failed to win any of their last four outings, while the last seven involvements have yielded just one victory.

Sunday's hosts follow up this weekend's clash with a contest against Excelsior next Friday, while their visitors await the challenge of Heerenveen the following day.
