You hear a lot of rumours, many of which fail to come to fruition, as clubs battle to keep their star assets on their books
However, there are exceptions to that. Fernando Torres £50m move to Chelsea springs to mind. And how about Manchester City’s stunning move for Robinho?
You can’t mention the January transfer window without mentioning Andy Carroll either, can you?
The striker’s £35m move to Liverpool from Newcastle in 2011 – at the time the highest amount paid for a British footballer – was a groundbreaking story.
talkSPORT.com has taken at look at some deals which are not beyond the realms of possibility heading into the final stages of the window.
Arsenal – Presnel Kimpembe
The 29-year-old was also wanted by former Arsenal boss Unai Emery. The Gunners would, however, have to cough up a considering amount of cash to land the Paris-Saint-Germain defender.
Chelsea – Ben Chilwell
Frank Lampard seems to have little faith in either Marcos Alonso or Emerson or the left-hand side, with that position a real weak spot for Chelsea.
Chilwell, an England international, would fit seamlessly into the full-back position and cement it down for the next decade.
Brighton – Ainsley Maitland-Niles
It’s no secret that Graham Potter wants to strengthen his options on the right-hand side. A short-term solution would be the Arsenal youngster, and could be a win-win for both parties.
Burnley – Josh Brownhill
They’ve got it! Sean Dyche’s men have now completed a £10m deal for the highly-rated Bristol City skipper.
The 24-year-old midfielder has scored five goals and provided two assists in 29 appearances for Lee Johnson’s side this season.
Bournemouth – Ollie Watkins
The Brentford attacker has been in devastating form this season, scoring 18 goals in 30 appearances for the Championship promotion hopefuls.
Aston Villa – Olivier Giroud
The Frenchman would be a smart loan addition for most Premier League sides in this window.
The 33-year-old is surplus to requirements and can leave Stamford Bridge
Villa have already signed striker Mbwana Samatta from Genk - but are keen to add another forward in the final hours before the deadline.
Crystal Palace – Yannick Carrasco
The Eagles are close to completing a deal for West Brom full-back Nathan Ferguson and are also plotting a move for the Belgian attacker Carrasco.
The 26-year-old, currently keeping fit in his native homeland during the off-season, is understood to be keen on a return to the Premier League.
There are potential stumbling blocks to the deal, though. Palace are keen to secure the Dalian Yifang winger on a loan deal, while the Chinese Super League outfit would prefer to sell him, which could price Palace out of a deal.
Everton – Wilfried Zaha
New trim, new club? It was no secret that Crystal Palace’s talisman wanted to leave Selhurst Park last summer.
Palace need to cash in soon, and with their safety almost guaranteed, the Toffees might just be able to prise the winger away.
Leicester – Jack Grealish
The Foxes look resigned to eventually losing James Maddison, and that could well happen in the summer.
The next best thing? The tricky and diminutive Grealish would add real quality to Brendan Rodgers’ midfield. A no brainer.
Manchester United – James Maddison
With United already securing the signature of Bruno Fernandes in a deal which could rise to
Amid increased fan discontent towards the board,
Manchester City – Milan Skriniar
This would be quite the coup for Pep Guardiola, who reportedly views the Inter Milan defender as his ‘dream signing’.
However, the reigning Premier League champions will have to set aside a whopping £80m to land the 24-year-old though.
Newcastle – Jarrod Bowen
The Magpies have reportedly submitted a mammoth bid for the Hull City playmaker.
The Championship side are vulnerable to losing their star asset as he is out of contract this summer.
While they have the option to extend his deal by a further 12 months, that has not yet been activated amid doubts over whether he wants to stay.
Crystal Palace are said to be plotting a move for the talented youngster.
Norwich – Ben Gibson
The Canaries are embroiled in a relegation battle and their biggest problem this season has been the number of goals they’ve conceded – which currently stands at 47 – the most of any Premier League side.
Therefore, a proven and experience centre-half would come as a huge boost.
Gibson, who is out of favour at Burnley, fits the bill and would be a welcome addition.
Liverpool – Kai Havertz
Philippe Coutinho has never really been replaced at Anfield, despite their midfield's success this season. The Bayer Leverkusen provides attacking threat from deep and certainly has the talent to work with the club's superstar front three – Sadio Mane, Mohamed Salah and Roberto Firmino.
Sheffield United – Sander Berge
Just like the Clarets, the Blades have got their man.
They completed a club-record fee, believed to be in the region of £27m, for the Genk midfielder on Thursday.
The 21-year-old Norway international, regarded as one of the top young talents in Europe, has scored four goals in 23 appearances for the reigning Belgian champions this season.
Southampton – Ebere Eze
A tricky and skilful operator, the QPR playmaker is available for a fee in the region of £15million.
Several top-flight sides have baulked at that price, but it seems only a matter of time before Eze is on his way and
Tottenham – Olivier Giroud
With Harry Kane out for up to three months, Spurs need striking reinforcements and quickly.
Spurs have held talks to sign AC Milan forward Krzysztof Piatek and Real Sociedad’s Willian Jose so far this month, but have been unable to agree a deal for either player.
And with former Gunners star Giroud reportedly keen to stay in London, it could be a short-term fix that could bring results.
Watford – Eric Garcia
It’s unlikely the Hornets will be doing any major business in the January transfer window, but a loan deal for the talented Manchester City defender could be worth a punt.
West Ham – Jarrod Bowen
The aforementioned Bowen is also a target for Leeds and West Brom but would prefer a move to the Premier League.
Top-flight clubs including Norwich, Watford and Southampton were keen, but balked at the price.
Bowen has scored 17 goals this season for the Hull.
Wolves – Thomas Lemar
Mundo Deportivo claim that Nuno Santo’s men will make an ambitious move for Thomas Lemar – something which is sure to whet the appetite of Wolves fans.
The report claims that Molineux could be the attacker’s next destination, with the club’s relationship with super agent Jorge Mendes ‘essential’ for any potential deal to take place.
Lemar, who has also attracted interest from Arsenal and Tottenham, is believed to be keen on a move to the Premier League.
The LaLiga side are believed to be open to allowing the 24-year-old to leave on loan, but only if a clause is inserted into the deal to make the contract permanent in the summer.
The January transfer window can be a rather tedious time of the year, let’s be honest now.
