Premier League team of the week as hat-trick heroes lead the way

mirror.co.uk, 25 October 2021, 10:46

It wasn't a great weekend for goalkeepers as just three Premier League stoppers kept a clean sheet during matchweek nine.

A whopping 40 goals were scored, with three players bagging themselves a hat-trick to earn a spot in our team of the week.

The biggest margin of victory was Chelsea's dominant 7-0 win against Norwich on Saturday, although it wasn't the biggest result.

That came at Old Trafford as Manchester United were hammered 5-0 by Jurgen Klopp's rampant Liverpool team on Sunday.

Manchester City, meanwhile, maintained the pressure on Chelsea and Liverpool with a comfortable 4-1 victory at Brighton on Saturday.

Here, Mirror Football selects the weekend's best Premier League XI - and it was a struggle not to make this a team of attackers.

Who should have been included in our Premier League team of the week? Let us know in the comments below

Unsurprisingly, no Manchester United players made the cut ( Image:

Aaron Ramsdale

Ramsdale reaffirmed his position as Arsenal's first-choice goalkeeper with another solid display against Aston Villa.

The former Wimbledon, Sheffield United and Bournemouth stopper produced four saves on Friday to help his new team secure a 3-1 victory at the Emirates.

But Ramsdale remains humble, telling Wimbledon's website in a recent interview: "It could quite easily be taken away, just as quickly as I got in.

"For me, it's to stay in the team week-by-week and keep producing good performances which the team and the staff are happy with.

"That's all I'm bothered about... If I keep the manager happy, which I'm doing now, I'll be doing well."

Tino Livarmento

Southampton's teenage defender scored his first Premier League goal against Burnley on Saturday in a battling 2-2 draw.

Livarmento has shown his class since leaving Chelsea for the Saints in August and looks certain to be a future England international.

Discussing his maiden goal, the youngster told reporters: "I feel like it was coming. In the previous games maybe getting little half chances and obviously hitting the post today.

"I obviously would've preferred if that one went in but a goals a goal and I'm looking forward to helping the team with a few more goals moving forward.

"We worked on the set piece in training and Redders [Nathan Redmond] was told to put the ball into a certain area. I just got across my man and headed towards goal and luckily it went in.

"I kind of couldn't take it all in because it happened so quickly but like I said a goal is a goal and I'm just happy to help the team."

Kurt Zouma

In truth, any of West Ham's back four could have got the nod after their impressive 1-0 win against Tottenham.

But we've gone for Zouma after making a great start to his Hammers career, nullifying Harry Kane on Sunday.

Zouma told the Evening Standard before the match: "You never know what can happen with him [Kane].

"You always have to be focused and concentrated and tight on him. But a game is not about one player, it is about the team, the way they play, the shape.

"You have to be even more focused on them, but you cannot change your style, the way you prepare for the games."

Jonny Evans

Evans produced another solid display on Sunday to help Leicester win 2-1 at Brentford.

The veteran centre-back is perhaps the definition of underrated and is closing in on 500 club appearances and 100 international caps.

The Foxes now have 14 points from their first nine Premier League games and are starting to look like a formidable outfit again after a slow start to the campaign.

Manager Brendan Rodgers told reporters: "Mixed start to the season but players are starting to come back and resetting everything - the international break came at a good time for us.

"You have seen it in this week the difference in how the players are working. They have come out with three big wins and we have to keep moving forward."

Ben Chilwell

The left-back is enjoying a cracking run of form, scoring in all three of his Premier League appearances.

Chilwell struggled after Chelsea's Champions League final victory in May, not featuring in England's Euro 2020 campaign and losing his Blues spot to Marcos Alonso.

But he's now back to his best, proven by his superb finish in his team's win against Norwich.

Chilwell tweeted after the match: "Hope you guys enjoyed that as much as us."

Thomas Partey

Arsenal haven't lost this season with Partey in the team and are in with a great chance of European qualification if he stays fit.

The Ghanaian midfielder scored his first goal for the club in their victory against Villa - and he'll be hoping its the first of many.

Speaking after the game, Partey said: "The team knew what to do we had to keep fighting and keep our intensity. At the end with the quality we have we are able to get results.

"All the team was frustrated and we wanted a win. That was the mentality we brought to this game today and we were able to get our result.

"I've been waiting for this moment for a long time. I think it was the right moment to have it and I'm very happy.

"The team performed very good. We have to do this every weekend and every game and with this we can achieve beautiful things.

"They deserve it. they have been supporting us when we have been down and when things have gone bad. This win is for them and I hope they enjoy it."

Mason Mount

The England midfielder bagged his first Chelsea hat-trick during the team's win against Norwich.

Mount has been urged to follow in the footsteps of his former manager Frank Lampard and be prolific in front of goal.

The player admitted: "Before the game, I put pressure on myself to get on the scoresheet, then three came around in the same game.

"It's obviously a massive moment for me. I'll remember this one for a long time.

"I was always getting in positions to score, but I just wasn't putting it in the back of the net."

Phil Foden

Foden reaffirmed his huge potential with two goals and an assist during Man City's win against Brighton.

The youngster is now one of Pep Guardiola's key players and the Spaniard believes he can get even better.

Guardiola told reporters: "In the final third he can play up front, has the quality to move and be aggressive one on one and arrive in the box.

"He can play as a false nine, a winger, wide right or wide left. He is a guy who is a midfield player with a big sense of the goal. He is still young and still has a margin to improve."

Mohamed Salah

What's left to say about Salah? The Egyptian forward scored another hat-trick during Liverpool's historic win against Man Utd.

The Reds hero has scored ten goals and produced five assists in nine Premier League appearances this term - and many believe he's now the best player on the planet.

Liverpool manager Klopp told reporters: "Salah, the fifth goal was incredible.

"He's in great shape and he deals with all the fuss being made about him really well, enjoys his football... long may it continue."

Josh King

King completed the perfect comeback on Saturday, scoring a hat-trick to help Watford recover from 2-1 down to win 5-2 at Everton.

The former Bournemouth striker spent six disappointing months at Goodison Park last season, not starting a single game, but all of that was forgotten at the weekend.

Discussing his performance, King said: "For a striker it is confidence. I had a horrible season last season. Any striker when you start scoring gets confidence.

"We needed the win today. This is a great group with togetherness. This is a team sport and sometimes I won't score, sometimes I will.

"Anyway way I can contribute - goals or assists - I am happy."

Maxwel Cornet

Burnley's summer recruit is already looking like one of the signings of the season after a blistering start to his Premier League career.

The former Lyon ace has scored three goals in his first four league outings, helping his new team earn a 2-2 draw at Southampton.

Burnley boss Sean Dyche told reporters: "We bought him [Cornet] to add to what we do. He had been good but we had to be a bit cautious with him as he cramped a bit with a hamstring issue.

"He gives us that bit of difference we have been searching for."
