Nuno Espirito Santo issues challenge to Harry Kane after ending goal drought

mirror.co.uk, 23 September 2021, 04:43

Tottenham Hotspur manager Nuno Espirito Santo has called for Harry Kane to improve following his goal against Wolverhampton Wanderers in the Carabao Cup on Wednesday night.

Spurs progressed into the next round of the competition on penalties after drawing 2-2 with Santo's former club after extra-time.

Tanguy Ndombele opened the scoring in the 14th minute as he raced through on goal and coolly slotted the ball past the onrushing John Ruddy.

Kane then doubled the away side's lead nine minutes later as he beat Wolves ' offside trap and smashed it home, ending the Englishman's four-game goal drought.

Leander Dendoncker halved the deficit from a corner in the 38th minute before Daniel Podence capitalised on a Ndombele slip in the 58th to level the tie.

Harry Kane scored Spurs' second goal against Wolverhampton Wanderers

The game then went to penalties and the Molineux Stadium outfit missed three of their five attempts, whereas Santo's side scored three of their four to ensure that they were in the pot for the next round.

The Portuguese boss suggested in his post-match interview, via football.london, that he believes star striker Kane has more to give in his upcoming fixtures, he said: "It's all about us, it's about... Just for you to understand what I'm trying to explain to you, in terms of the squad and in terms of the preparation of the squad we have players who have 65, 70 sessions and we have players who have 15 sessions.

"Until we can balance everything, I think that will be the moment the players improve and get better. Harry did a very good game. I think he has much more to give and it's about the team improving and growing together."

Kane wanted to leave north London over the summer and attempted to force a move to title favourites Manchester City, who saw the no. 9 as the ideal Sergio Aguero replacement.

However, Spurs chairman Daniel Levy was unwilling to adhere to the 28-year-old's request and instead, slapped a £160million price tag on the striker which would make him one of the most expensive signings of all time.

Having spent £100m on Aston Villa's Jack Grealish earlier in the window, the Cityzens were unable to match the significant asking price and thus put an end to their interest in Kane, for now anyway.

But Kane wasn't the only player that was expected to leave the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium over the summer, having fallen out of favour under Jose Mourinho, there was a suspicion that Ndombele may have departed too.

Asked about the performance of the 24-year-old, Santo replied: "Let's try to avoid as much as we can individual analysis. We will do it and we will do it amongst ourselves and I think we have to be patient with Tanguy because of all that happened in pre-season and this is his third game and already we've had however many games we've played so far.

"So, let's be patient with all our players and patient with the time that they need to get to the level that I truly believe their talent can allow."

Spurs will take on more Premier League opposition in the next round of the competition after being drawn away at Burnley, who beat Rochdale 4-1 in the third round thanks to four second-half goals from Jay Rodriguez.
