Next Tottenham manager: Conte favourite but Fonseca and Eddie Howe also in mix

talksport.com, 1 November 2021, 10:41
Nuno Espirito Santo has left his position as Tottenham manager just four months after taking over.

The Spurs boss' short-lived tenure in north London came to an end after 17 matches in charge, only winning eight of them.

A dreadful showing in the 3-0 defeat to Manchester United was the last straw for Nuno who had also lost derby games to West Ham and Arsenal.

Supporters booed his decision to substitute Lucas Moura against the Red Devils, and Tottenham also failed to have a single shot on target.

But who could Spurs look to bring in now? talkSPORT takes a look…

Antonio Conte

The Italian boasts an incredible CV, breeding success from mediocrity wherever he goes, most recently ending nine years of Juventus dominance to win Serie A with Inter Milan.

Conte also lifted the Premier League and FA Cup with Chelsea over a two-year spell, but his tenure turned sour, eventually resulting in an acrimonious exit.

Simon Jordan previously suggested Tottenham would be a 'match made in hell' for the 52-year-old when he appeared close to the Spurs job this summer.

It would be hugely ironic if Conte, who was linked with replacing Ole Gunnar Solskjaer at Old Trafford, ended up back in London because of a result in which the Norwegian used Conte's favoured 3-5-2 formation.

talkSPORT understands he is the top choice but can get Daniel Levy get a deal over the line having tried and failed in the summer?

Odds: 2/1

Graham Potter

Despite battling relegation with Brighton in his two seasons in charge, Potter had already gained several plaudits for his attacking brand of football.

And the Seagulls are flying this time around, with a 2-2 draw at Liverpool sending them up to seventh - one point above Tottenham.

Potter was again linked with the Spurs vacancy after Levy sacked Jose Mourinho back in April.

And Jamie O'Hara told talkSPORT last month that the 46-year-old is the 'real deal' and should have been the one appointed over Nuno.

Odds: 5/1

Paulo Fonseca

The Portuguese is best known for his time at Roma, where he earned a fifth and a seventh place finish in Serie A during his two seasons in charge.

Fonseca was heavily linked with a move to Tottenham this summer as the top choice of new sporting director Fabio Paritici.

According to the 48-year-old, a move to North London was 'done' until Paritici pulled the plug on the deal due to apparent concerns over his qualities and risk-taking approach.

He made headlines after a Champions League win over Manchester City when he appeared in a post-match press conference as his childhood hero, Zorro.

Odds: 5/1

Sergio Conceicao

Another Portuguese who has made a name for himself across Europe, having first made a big impression at Nantes in France and now at Porto.

Conceicao guided the Ligue 1 outfit away from the relegation zone when he took over in December 2016 up to seventh by the time he left in June.

He has since overseen two title-winning campaigns in Portugal which his style of play reflective of his attributes as a player: fast and aggressive.

Conceicao frequently shapes up in a 4-4-2 system, in which he expects him teams to be direct in their approach and press high without the ball.

Odds: 12/1

Eddie Howe

Darren Bent told talkSPORT that he would like to see Spurs go after Howe last term, who has been out of work since leaving Bournemouth.

To outsiders, there may be a perception that the mild-mannered boss may lack the ruthlessness to manage a club that wants to reach the top.

However, Jack Wilshere revealed last month that Howe is anything but a soft touch after working under time during his time at the Cherries.

Odds: 15/2

Mauricio Pochettino

Numerous reports suggested last season that the Argentine is open to coming back to the club he was in charge of for five years.

Pochettino's spell at Tottenham ended in November 2019 just months after he guided the club to their first ever Champions League final.

It's thought Pochettino and chairman Levy still have a good relationship and the PSG boss has previously claimed he would be open to going back to Spurs one day.

The 49-year-old took charge of PSG in January but has struggled in the French capital - failing to win either the Champions League or the domestic title.

Pochettino's men are leading Ligue 1 this time around but the Spurs fan-favourite has faced criticism to get the best out of Lionel Messi so far.

Odds: 14/1
