Neuer, who turned 36 on Sunday, made way for both his understudies in Germany's 2-0 win over Israel at Hoffenheim's PreZero Arena on Saturday as Marc-Andre ter Stegen and Kevin Trapp shared duties between the posts. The latter even saved an injury-time penalty, but Bayern's legendary stopper is expected to return to the line-up and retake the armband for the trip to Amsterdam. Nico Schlotterbeck and Anton Stach made their senior debuts against Israel, while David Raum starred at left-back in a much changed Germany side without the likes of Serge Gnabry and Joshua Kimmich. Coach Hansi Flick is expected to change things once more, with Bayern duo Thomas Müller and Leroy Sane - both second-half substitutes at the weekend - likely to start. Jamal Musiala is also pushing to feature from the off again in midfield, while Matthias Ginter and Christian Günter are similarly in contention to start in defence as Germany step up their preparations for the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar this winter.
There are a number of familiar faces in the Netherlands ranks, with Malen chief among them. The Dortmund man actually scored against Die Mannschaft on his debut for the Dutch back in 2019 and is hoping to collect his 19th cap for the Oranje against the country where he now earns a living. Meanwhile, Freiburg's form hasn't only benefited the German national team with the rise of Günter and Schlotterbeck. Goalkeeper Mark Flekken made his Netherlands debut on Saturday in the 4-2 win over Denmark, continuing a season to remember for Freiburg and their players. The Dutch are also headed up by former Bayern coach Louis van Gaal, while Davy Klassen spent two and a bit seasons with Werder Bremen, and Wout Weghorst scored six Bundesliga goals this term before ending his three-and-a-half-year spell with Wolfsburg in January.
