Mike Ashley situation clarified as Derby administrators provide takeover update

Former Newcastle United owner Mike Ashley has not enquired about purchasing Derby County - yet.

Last week saw Ashley end his 14-year association with the Magpies. He sold up to Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund for more than £300million.

Mirror Football revealed at the weekend that Ashley is monitoring crisis club Derby, with a view to a potential purchase.

The Rams entered administration last month and are fighting a number of fires off-the-field, including a points deduction.

Andrew Hosking and Carl Jackson of Quantuma were appointed joint administrators.

Despite plenty of speculation regarding proposed interest in purchasing the East Midlands club, it has been confirmed by the duo that no approach has been made by Ashley as things stand.

"We have been contacted by a number of interested parties in relation to the sale of Derby County and have subsequently issued a series of non-disclosure agreements (NDAs) for signature in order to proceed," said Hosking.

"Of those who have returned a signed NDA, several have been able to provide the necessary proof of funds we have requested to be considered as a serious bidder.

"As this is an ongoing process, we are unable to comment on the names of the individuals and organisations that have met this criteria at this time.

"We can however confirm that we have neither been approached by, nor have we entered into dialogue with Mike Ashley."

Derby are bottom of the Championship after incurring an automatic 12-point handicap for entering administration.

However, this week the club confirmed that they would be appealing that decision.

On Monday, an EFL statement said: "The Administrators at Derby County have lodged an appeal against the 12-point deduction imposed on the Club's 2021/22 season total on 22 September 2021.

"As a consequence, this matter has been referred to an independent Arbitration panel who will consider representations from both parties before making a determination.

"At this current time the Club's points total in the Championship table will remain unchanged."

The deduction leaves Derby on two points at present. Without it they would be 14th in the table.

Wayne Rooney's side, who have lost just once in their last five games, travel to Preston North End this weekend.
