Man Utd told Cristiano Ronaldo's "obsession" may not be enough to emulate rivals

Cristiano Ronaldo's goals and "obsession" with getting results may not be enough for Manchester United to win the Premier League title this season, according to Louis Saha.

Ronaldo has made a fantastic start to his second spell with United, scoring four goals in his first three games after joining on a two-year contract from Juventus.

The 36-year-old's return to his former club has coincided with a good start to the Premier League campaign for United, who have taken 13 points from a possible 15 so far.

That puts them level on points with Chelsea and Liverpool at the top following their 2-1 win at West Ham on Sunday.

However, United needed a dramatic late penalty save from David de Gea to beat the Hammers and the result came in the same week as disappointing 2-1 defeat by Young Boys in the Champions League.

Former United striker Saha has been impressed by Ronaldo and thinks his professionalism will rub off on his team-mates, but has his doubts about a title challenge this season.

"I think he will be one of the pieces of the puzzle that they may need and will be an influence on others," he said on BBC Radio 5 Live.

"So it has had this impact already, some players feel they have to do better. I do think it can bring the success that United have chased for six, seven years.

"That obsession about results, goals, improvements, I do think it's needed especially for young players like [Mason] Greenwood, [Marcus] Rashford and even [Anthony] Martial.

"They're young players and having someone with experience of more than 700 goals, it's unbelievable for a youngster."

Saha added: "Winning the Premier League is not about who is better, who is the most consistent, who has the most desire, who is going to be more aggressive.

"I remember Leicester [when they won in 2015/16], sorry, they were not the best team when they won the Premier League.

"Liverpool, I don't think they were the best team at some points, they were the more equipped mentally to win the scrappy games.

"That's the nature of the Premier League and now it's nice to have players but that's not enough."

Manchester City remain favourites with the bookies to win the Premier League this season, despite currently sitting three points behind the pacesetters.

City were held to a 0-0 draw by Southampton on Saturday, while they were also beaten 1-0 by Tottenham on the opening day of the season.

Chelsea are second favourites and are in imperious form under Thomas Tuchel, with all four of their wins coming alongside clean sheets.

Romelu Lukaku has turned the Blues into serious contenders following their Champions League success in May, but they will face plenty of competitors for the trophy.

Liverpool are also unbeaten with four wins and a draw so far, with Jurgen Klopp's side picking up a 3-0 win over Crystal Palace on Saturday.
