Man Utd hit with UEFA fine after incident during Champions League clash

Manchester United have been fined €10,000 by UEFA after three people invaded the Old Trafford pitch during the Champions League match against Young Boys in December.

The Red Devils drew 1-1 last month in the dead-rubber match, during which a trio of fans managed to evade security and make their way onto the pitch.

Ralf Rangnick's side had taken the lead as Mason Greenwood opened the scoring for a much-changed United side after only nine minutes, but Fabian Rieder equalised with a stunning strike shortly before half-time.

UEFA's fine equates to just £8,312.

The Red Devils will face Spanish champions Atletico Madrid in the last-16, hoping to win the competition for the first time 2008 or at least reach the the semi-final stage after last doing so in 2011.

United are currently resting up on their winter break ahead of a crucial few months.

Rangnick has slowly steadied the ship following Ole Gunnar Solskjaer 's sacking, overseeing back-to-back Premier League wins for the first time.

"It is very important. We have high ambitions in the club," Rangnick stated following the Red Devils' 1-0 win against West Ham.

"We play a week on Friday against Middlesbrough and then away at Burnley. All of the games present challenges and we will have to perform on a high level.

"It will get physical again in those games, but I think the team realises now they are talking those steps. It is not so easy now to score goals against us.

"This was the best part, not only the clean sheet, but the way we defend as a team; the counter pressing was good, and we took the ball away from them."

The acclaimed German coach, who is set to make way for a permanent replacement in the summer, added: "Yes [it's big to go into the international break with a win], absolutely, for everybody.

"For the players, for the staff. It's good to have a little bit of a rest [and then] we'll prepare the team for the rest of the season."

United return to action next Friday in the FA Cup Fourth Round, as they play host to Chris Wilder' s Boro.

Meanwhile, Kyle Walker 's red card that he was shown in their final group stage game against RB Leipzig has been increased to a three-match ban.

The England defender will therefore miss both of City's round-of-16 matches against Sporting and potentially the first leg of a quarter-final.
