Man City thrash Leipzig but animated Guardiola far from happy on landmark night

mirror.co.uk, 15 September 2021, 21:23

Jack Grealish scored a superb goal on his Champions League debut - but Pep Guardiola still wasn't happy.

Grealish showed he could be the difference this season in Europe with a wonderful solo effort as the £100million record signing cut in from the left to curl home an absolute beauty.

Guardiola's response was to pull Grealish over and give him an animated tactics talk.

The City boss also bawled in Riyad Mahrez's face at 4-2 and he was unhappy with parts of this curate's egg of a performance in his 300th game in charge.

As devastating as City were going forward, Christopher Nkunku capitalised on some slack defending to score a hat-trick and make it a more nervy night than it should have been.

Ruben Dias was not his usual commanding best with John Stones missing and Guardiola knows City must tighten up if they are going to go one better than last season's final disappointment.

Still, Grealish can be pleased with his night's work and he also laid on City's opener to take his tally to two goals and two assists for the Blues.

Kevin De Bruyne also marked his first start of the season after recovering from an ankle injury with an assist in this crazy game.

Leipzig boss Jesse Marsch feared they were not ready to face City after they were thumped 4-1 by Bayern Munich on Saturday to suffer their third league defeat in four games.

And the American's fears were confirmed when City took a 16th-minute lead through Nathan Ake.

Grealish whipped a corner in to the edge of the six-yard area where Ake steamed in to power home a header, which keeper Peter Gulasci could only divert in off the underside of the bar.

Mahrez went close with a left-foot curler before City bagged a second on 28 minutes when De Bruyne swung in a cross from the right and Nordi Mukiele headed into his own net as he attempted to nod the ball back to Gulasci.

Leipzig pulled one back on 42 minutes when Emil Forsberg crossed to the back post where Mukiele partly atoned for his blunder by nodding the ball back for Nkunku to head home.

Guardiola's frustration with his side's defending was obvious as he slumped into his seat in the technical area.

His annoyance was tempered as the Blues resorted their two-goal advantage in the second minute of first-half stoppage time from the penalty spot when Lukas Klostermann blocked Ferran Torres' header with his arm and Mahrez converted the spot-kick.

Guardiola's rollercoaster of emotions continued as Leipzig took advantage of more sloppy City marking to make it 3-2 six minutes into the second half when Dani Olmo crossed for Nkunku to head home.

Cue Grealish to restore order on 58 minutes with his stunning goal as he collected Dias' kick on the left and cut inside Tyler Adams before curling his shot home into the far corner.

Nkunku completed his hat-trick on 73 minutes when City went to sleep and he sneaked in to score with an angled shot.

This was more like basketball than football and Joao Cancelo hit a screamer from 25 yards out two minutes later before substitute Gabriel Jesus made it 6-3 on 85 minutes.
