Liverpool 'warn' Tsimikas for spitting gum into stands after Carabao Cup final

Liverpool have reminded Kostas Tsimikas of his responsibilities after he was seen spitting his chewing gum into the Wembley stands following Sunday's Carabao Cup final.

The incident occurred as the Reds received their winners' medals in the Royal Box after a tense penalty shootout victory over Chelsea.

Tsimikas, 25, played no part in the final but featured prominently earlier in the competition with starts against Norwich City, Preston North End and Leicester City.

The Greece international, an unused substitute against Chelsea, was part of the joyous celebrations in the Royal Box as captain Jordan Henderson hoisted the Carabao Cup above his head.

He also had his own moment with the three-handled trophy on the pitch and was seen lifting it alongside close friend Mohamed Salah.

Minutes earlier, eagle-eyed fans spotted him appearing to spit out his gum onto the seats below the Royal Box as Liverpool players revelled with their medals around their necks.

Alternative camera angles used as part of television coverage seemed to show there was no one positioned immediately below the amassed players in red.

Regardless, the Daily Mail claims Liverpool warned Tsimikas over his behaviour after they were made aware of his actions. The report adds the former Olympiacos star has expressed his regret, and that he was merely disposing of his gum rather than spitting with menace.

Tsimikas was later filmed dancing with the trophy on the pitch and in the dressing room as Liverpool players belted out various anthems to mark their ninth EFL Cup title.

Having arrived at Anfield in August 2020 for £11.75million, he has come on leaps and bounds during his second season with the Reds to provide competition for Andy Robertson at left-back.

He has made a total of 18 appearances in all competitions, already 11 more than he achieved last campaign, while chipping in with three assists.

Tsimikas - who regularly refers to himself as the 'Greek Scouser' on social media - shared a selection of pictures of himself with the Carabao Cup after the match.

He captioned the Instagram post: "What a feeling!!! Proud to win my first trophy with this great club! More to come."

Liverpool are still competing in three competitions in search of an unprecedented quadruple and take on Norwich in the FA Cup fifth round on Wednesday.

The Reds then return to Premier League action against West Ham on Saturday before resuming their Champions League campaign against Inter Milan on Tuesday for the second leg of their last-16 clash having won the first encounter 2-0 at San Siro.
