Liverpool v Fulham: Alisson injured as Salah chases 200th goal in Anfield clash

talksport.com, 1 December 2023, 13:48
Liverpool will bid to get their Premier League title challenge back on track when they host Fulham this weekend.

The Reds have won just once in their past three top-flight games but remain only two points adrift of league leaders Arsenal.

Trent Alexander-Arnold's late strike rescued a point for Jurgen Klopp's men in a 1-1 draw versus Manchester City last time out.

Liverpool returned to winning ways by thumping LASK Linz 4-0 on Thursday to qualify for the last 16 of the Europa League.

The victory continued the Merseysiders' imperious Anfield form, with the club having won all 10 of their home fixtures so far this term.

Liverpool vs Fulham: Super Salah

The last four meetings between the two sides have surprisingly been evenly split with two draws and a win apiece.

However, Aleksandar Mitrovic's summer exit has seen Marco Silva's Cottagers struggled for goals this season.

A Mohamed Salah penalty was the difference when the teams met at Anfield last season and the forward has continued to go from strength to strength this term.

The Egyptian, who netted in midweek, is now just one goal away from his 200th for Liverpool as he makes his 300th start this weekend.

Salah has already bagged the double century of goals in England, but two of his strikes came during his stint at Chelsea.

Liverpool have won 19 Premier League games in 2023 and have registered at least 20 wins in all seven previous full years under Jürgen Klopp's management. The Reds last won 20+ league games in eight years back-to-back between 1971 and 1980 (10 in a row), while only two managers have ever won 20+ Premier League games in eight years in a row: Arsène Wenger (13, 1998-2010) and Sir Alex Ferguson (8, 2005-12).

Liverpool have conceded just three goals in the second half of Premier League games this season, failing to win any of the three times they've shipped after half-time (D2 L1). Meanwhile, eight of Fulham's last nine Premier League goals have come in the second half.

Since a 1-0 defeat to Fulham at Anfield in March 2021, which was the sixth consecutive league defeat suffered by the Reds on home soil, Liverpool have lost just one of their last 48 Premier League matches at Anfield (W37 D10) - a 2-1 loss to Leeds United in October 2022.

Liverpool have lost just one of their last 10 Premier League games against Fulham (W7 D2), a 1-0 home loss in March 2021.

Liverpool vs Fulham: What has been said?

Klopp raved about youngster Jarell Quansah after the academy defender impressed again in the win over LASK.

He said: "Jarell played a super game. But, by the way, the last line tonight, starting from the right… Joey, top, top, top; Ibou, top. That we took him off was a medical decision.

"No risks, stuff like this, give him minutes but not too long and Jarell played a super game, that's true. That couldn't be better news for the club, to be honest. I think before this season a lot of people told us we should buy a centre-half.

"We knew we had Jarell. Did we know that he will show up like this? No, not exactly, but we were pretty hopeful, so the future is bright.

"It's cool. Our own boy, calm on the ball, good in the challenge, quick, ruthless in the right moments and besides Caoimhin [Kelleher], who had one or two saves, [he] probably had the most spectacular defensive situations when he saved our backside in some moments. So, that's really good. [It's] top news for us."

Only Arsenal's (7 - 6F 1A) Premier League games have seen more penalties scored than Fulham's so far this season (6 - 2F 4A). Only Wolves (5) have conceded more penalty goals than Fulham (4) in the division so far, while no team has scored more from the spot without conceding one than Liverpool (3).

Liverpool have lost just one of their last 11 Premier League games when falling behind (W4 D6) and that was after going 2-1 down in the 96th minute at Spurs in September. The Reds have won the most points from losing positions in the competition this season (12).

Liverpool vs Fulham: Team news

Virgil van Dijk and Dominik Szoboszlai were both rested in midweek and will come back in as the hosts manage several injuries.

Both Alisson Becker and Diogo Jota suffered issues against City and will be sidelined.

Liverpool are also without long-term absentees Thiago Alcantara, Andrew Robertson and Stefan Bajcetic.

Fulham can welcome back Joao Palhinha from suspension, but Issa Diop, Adama Traore and Rodrigo Muniz (knee) all remain out.

Fulham have won none of their last six away Premier League games (D3 L3), though their last win was on Merseyside in August, a 1-0 win at Everton. Indeed, Fulham have won four of their last five away league games against Everton and Liverpool (L1), having only won one of their first 55 such visits in league football beforehand.

Fulham have scored just four goals in 16 Premier League away games against Liverpool, and never more than once in a match. It's the lowest goals-per-game ratio (0.25) of any team to play more than 10 away games against an opponent in the competition.
