Liverpool star Andy Robertson set to create Premier League history next season

Andy Robertson is in a great position to break the record for the most assists by a defender in the Premier League - but Trent Alexander-Arnold is hot on his heels for the accolade.

Robertson, 28, has produced 49 assists in the Premier League for Hull City and Liverpool - the second-most in the competition's 30-year history - and is just 10 behind Leighton Baines' record. Meanwhile, Alexander-Arnold, 23, has provided just four fewer than his Anfield colleague.

Former England international Baines, 37, scored 32 goals and provided 53 assists during his Premier League career for Wigan and Everton, making more than 600 professional appearances for club and country. Like Robertson, Baines played at left-back.

Robertson will be confident of breaking Baines' record during the 2022-23 campaign. He provided 10 Premier League assists last term, scoring three goals. That marked the third time he reached double figures for assists during a single Premier League season.

The Scotland captain's creative record looks very impressive when compared to the amount of games he's played. Robertson has made 218 Premier League appearances to date, while Baines played 418 games in the competition between 2005 and 2020.

Robertson became the Scot with the most assists in Premier League history last season, surpassing Gary McAllister's tally of 47. The ex-midfielder, who is Steven Gerrard's assistant at Aston Villa, represented Leeds, Coventry and Liverpool in the English top flight.

Perhaps the only man stopping Robertson from breaking Baines' record is Alexander-Arnold, who is capable of pipping his teammate to the post next term. The Englishman wracked up 12 Premier League assists last season, second only to teammate Mohamed Salah (13).

Alexander-Arnold has a tremendous record in front of goal. He's provided 45 assists in just 161 Premier League games during his career, scoring 10 times. At just 23 years of age, he'll be hoping to go way beyond Baines and Robertson in the charts during the seasons to come.

In fact, there's every chance Alexander-Arnold could retire as the Premier League's record assist provider. Former Manchester United winger Ryan Giggs currently boasts that honour after producing 162 assists during his 22-season Premier League career, during which he won 13 titles.

Both Robertson and Alexander-Arnold have played a key role in Liverpool's success under Jurgen Klopp. The two defenders have helped the Reds win the Premier League, Champions League, FA Cup, EFL Cup, UEFA Super Cup and Club World Cup since 2018.

"I think he's [Alexander-Arnold] actually a better passer than [David] Beckham, a better crosser than Beckham," said former England winger Joe Cole in April. "That's saying something because Becks was the best of my generation."

Ex-Man Utd captain Rio Ferdinand added: "Trent is as good a passer as anyone on the planet right now, I don't care. When I saw one of his passes yesterday, I was screaming. And it's not usually passes that do that to me. It's out or order the way he passes the ball. It's not only the execution, it's the vision."
