Klopp bolsters Liverpool backroom staff with coach recommended by Alisson

Liverpool have decided to bring in former Brazil international Claudio Taffarel as their new goalkeeping coach in a move that Jurgen Klopp hopes will allow the club to become a "proper goalkeeping school."

Taffarel, who won the World Cup with in 1994 with the Selecao, will move to Anfield after finalising a work permit this week to join the Reds.

The 55-year-old will balance his work schedule between his club duties with his new Liverpool role and working with the Brazil national team.

He is the third goalkeeping coach at Anfield, joining current first-team goalkeeping coaches John Achterberg and Jack Robinson.

The 55-year-old will join John Achterberg and Jack Robinson in working with the Reds' first-team goalkeepers Alisson, Caoimhin Kelleher and Adrian, as well as the budding goalkeepers in the academy.

"The idea is that, in our opinion, we have now in a lot of positions the best we can imagine," Jurgen Klopp told the club's official website after Taffarel's appointment was announced.

"In terms of goalkeepers, it means we have Alisson Becker, who for us is the best goalie in the world. We have Caoimhin Kelleher, who we really think is an exceptional, exceptional player. We have Adrian, who has shown his qualities since he arrived here.

"Then we have Marcelo Pitaluga, then we have Harvey Davies, so we have five goalies in different age groups, which is great but we want to have even more of these guys.

"We want to build kind of our own philosophy in goalkeeping because we all agree it's its own game, so that's why we wanted to have another completely different view on it.

"We spoke to Ali because two of the best goalies in the world are Brazilians and so we found a solution with bringing in Taffarel as a really nice addition to our whole coaching staff. We really think it can give us just a different view again, to look at different things.

"We really want to really be a proper goalkeeping school in world football and so that's why we're bringing in a third very, very experienced goalkeeper coach."

According to Goal, it is believed Alisson — who works with Taffarel on International duty with Brazil — pushed for the goalkeeping coach to be brought over to Liverpool.

And after holding talks with the club at their state-of-the-art training complex at Kirkby over the summer, Taffarel has now agreed a deal to join Klopp's staff.

Alisson, 27, signed a new six-year deal this summer that ties him to the Merseyside club until 2027 and his willingness to work with Taffarel will no doubt have proved a factor in his appointment.

The former shot stopper's experience is largely unmatched at international level, having won 101 caps for his country and lifted the Copa America twice, in addition to his World Cup triumph 27 years ago.

After playing in Italy with clubs such as Parma and Reggiana, Taffarel joined Galatasaray, where he later worked as a coach and had two short spells as interim manager.

It is not the first time that Taffarrel has combined two jobs into one while working with Brazil, having worked with the national side since 2014.

Klopp appeared to dismiss the suggestion that his arrival would spell the end for long-serving coach Achterberg, who has been with the club since 2009.

"Having Taffarel here will be good for John - and Jack - to exchange ideas and analysis. He's just another hand in a very important part of the game," he added.

"Having different cultures is important at the training ground. We have here Dutch, English, German and now a little bit of Brazilian influence in the coaching staff. It helps for sure."
