Kenya failed to go top of the 2021 African Cup of Nations Group G standings after Togo held them to a 1-1 draw at Kasarani on Monday.
Kenya would have gone top with four points after Egypt and Comoros drew 0-0 in the other match in the group had they hung onto their lead. Johanna Omollo scored the hosts' goal before Hakim Oura-Sama equalised for Togo.
Kenya could have taken an early lead in the third minute if Omollo was not flagged for offside. Eric Ouma released the midfielder down the left wing but the referee stopped Kenya's ambitious movement with his raised flag.
After a tense moment in Togo's penalty area, the visitors cleared the danger which was posed by Eric Johanna's good free-kick delivery in the 12th minute. Omollo and Cliff Nyakeya missed the chance to slot the ball past Malcolm Barcola as their efforts were blocked inside a crowded area.
Hakim Ouro-Sama conceded a corner as he tried to clear the ball away but Kenya could not make use of the chance presented by the resultant corner as goalkeeper Barcola managed to get the ball this time around.
A miscommunication between goalkeeper Ian Otieno and Joseph Okumu almost gave David Philippe Henen chance to head Togo in front shortly after.
Lalawele Atakora crossed the ball into Kenya's box and as both Otieno and Okumu went for the same ball, they missed it and allowed Henen chance to take a free header which went out.
Kenya took the lead in the 36th minute when Omollo dispossessed Ouro-Sama just outside the box and created himself enough space to take aim at goal.
He fired in a powerful shot which rattled the crossbar before going in with Barcola beaten in goal. A minute later, Ouma tried his luck from a distance but his shot was timid and the visiting goalkeeper had no problem collecting it with ease.
A 53rd-minute chance for Kenya went begging as no one was in the box to connect with Omollo's low cross from the left-wing. The full-back had left two opponents for dead before delivering the ball across the goalmouth.
Oura-Sama then equalised for the Sparrowhawks four minutes after the hour mark after he rose highest to meet a corner ball and headed powerfully past Otieno.
Michael Olunga, who had little impact in the game, missed two opportunities late on as Kenya were left rueing the chances that went abegging.
