Rivals for top spot, Forest Green Rovers, could only manage a 2-2 draw with Mansfield, giving the Grecians a massive opportunity on the final day of the season.
However, down in Devon, Exeter themselves lost to the Valiants stopping them taking advantage of the slip up.
The results also secured play-off spots for Port Vale and Mansfield.
And after the final whistle on the south coast, fans of both clubs took to the pitch.
And talkSPORT reporter Ian Abrahams revealed things got a little unsavoury between the sets of supporters.
He told GameDay Live: "We've got the entire pitch covered with fans now. They're facing each other and there is only a small line of stewards and there are things being thrown from Exeter fans towards the Port Vale fans.
"We've seen a firework thrown and also a couple of bottles of water, plastic bottles.
"The Exeter players at the end of the game all went down on their knees. They can't believe they blew the chance of winning the title on the final day.
"Port Vale, they all hugged on the touchline, it's been a really emotional season off the pitch and now their season continues into the play-offs.
"Still things being thrown from one side to the other, it's a bit nasty actually."
