Inter Milan boss Inzaghi's old Liverpool comments prove to be painfully accurate

Liverpool proved Inter Milan boss Simone Inzaghi right as they snatched two late goals at the San Siro to completely swing the Champions League tie in their favour

Inter Milan were handed a harsh lesson on Wednesday night as two late goals from Liverpool gave the Serie A Champions a mountain to climb in their knockout European tie.

Liverpool were second best for the majority of the second half in Milan, but they scored twice late on with their only two shots on target all game.

Inter on the other hand, didn't test Alisson Becker at any point in the Liverpool goal, and were made to pay for their lack of cutting edge in the final third.

However, much to Simone Inzaghi 's disappointment, his old comments about Jurgen Klopp 's side were spot on.

Despite there being no shots on target until Roberto Firmino's opening goal after 75 minutes, it was a frantic, end-to-end game at the San Siro, as Inter matched Liverpool's energy stride for stride.

They had the better opportunities too, as Hakan Calhanoglu saw his effort crash off the crossbar, and Ivan Perisic's ball was marginally too high for Lautaro Martinez, who would've had an empty net to head into.

Inter learnt the hard way though, as in Europe's elite competition you have to take your chances to stand any chance of progressing, and as soon as the Italian giants eased off Liverpool, Firmino and Mohamed Salah punished them.

Unfortunately for Inzaghi, this wasn't much of a surprise, as after Inter drew Liverpool in the knockout stages, the Italian boss said: "Teams like Liverpool have something more. They always give you the idea that you're in it, that you can score a goal. Instead, they punish you."

That's exactly what Klopp's side did, and now Inter face one of the toughest tests of all, trying to overturn a two goal deficit at Anfield to prolong their European venture.

Due to the new Champions League rules, they won't even have away goals to rely on either, although not many sides score three at Anfield on a regular basis.

It was a tight first half with not much in it, but Inter came out in the second half firing, and they put Liverpool on the back foot, although the Reds proved their pedigree as they still managed to find two goals against the run of play.

Former Inter Champion Ashley Young made a return to the Premier League this summer as he joined up with old side Aston Villa, and heaped nothing but praise on Liverpool at the expense of his former employers.

Young told Five Live: "Inter had to come out attacking more in the second half and they did. Whether it was the last pass or last cross it wasn't there and they couldn't score.

"Good teams always find a way to win and Liverpool did that. From the first goal they controlled the game. They're definitely one of the contenders to win the tournament."

It will still be a tough match for Klopp's side at Anfield in two weeks time, as Inter have nothing to lose, but Liverpool will be extremely comfortable thanks to their healthy advantage obtained against the run of play.
