Ian Wright has heartwarming reaction to grandson D'Margio scoring first goal

D'Margio Wright-Phillips only made his senior Stoke City debut in January, but the grandson of former Arsenal and England striker Ian Wright is already off the mark

Arsenal legend Ian Wright didn't even try to hide his joy after his grandson D'Margio Wright-Phillips scored his first senior goal.

D'Margio, whose father Shaun Wright-Phillips retired from football in 2019, broke his duck in Stoke City's Championship game against Fulham in what was only his third appearance since joining the Potters from Manchester City.

Wright had praised his grandson for his man-of-the-match performance against Hull City in midweek, and was keeping up with the action at the bet365 Stadium remotely while covering the Premier League action from the TV studio.

And not even a near-immediate equaliser from the visitors was enough to dampen his pride as the 20-year-old forward continued to impress in what is still a young career.

How does the Wright-Phillips family compare to other footballing dynasties? Let us know in the comments section

Wright-Phillips' only Manchester City action came for their under-21 side in the Papa Johns Trophy, and he left in December without a senior appearance to his name.

He took less than a minute to get off the mark against Fulham, putting away a cross from Josh Tymon, only for Rodrigo Muniz to deliver a quickfire equaliser for the London side.

Fulham eventually won the game 3-2, with Bobby Decordova-Reid scoring the decisive goal, but Wright didn't seem too bothered by the other goings-on.

After letting out a heart-warming cheer in response to the goal, Wright was informed that Fulham had already equalised.

"I don't care," was his matter-of-fact response, with nothing taking away from his joy.

The goal came nine years to the month after Shaun Wright-Phillips' final Premier League goal, for QPR against Chelsea at Loftus Road, and 24 years after Ian Wright scored the last of his 185 Arsenal goals.

Wright-Phillips isn't the only member of the Stoke squad to come from a famous footballing family.

Tyrese Campbell, who came off the bench during the game, is the son of former Arsenal striker and Ian Wright's former teammate Kevin Campbell.

Also in the squad for the game against Fulham was Tom Ince, whose father Paul Ince played with Ian Wright for the England national team.

Michael O'Neill's side sit in ninth place after their defeat, while Fulham remain top after scoring their 71st, 72nd and 73rd league goals of the season.

"Proud is beyond an understatement," Shaun Wright-Phillips wrote on Instagram earlier this month after his son's senior debut in the FA Cup.

"I've been blessed to play for some amazing teams and represent my country at the very highest level. But yesterday afternoon, I witnessed my son make his professional debut, and this I am most proud of.

"Keep grounded @dmargio_wright_phillips, keep working hard and strive to be the best version of yourself possible. But what ever chapters lie ahead, you can be extremely proud of what you have already achieved, because I am."
