Hugh Jackman contacts Ryan Reynolds after tearing up at Wrexham documentary

Hugh Jackman has admitted that the trailer for Wrexham AFC 's new documentary reduced him to tears.

The Australian film star was stunned by the sneak peak at the doc, which is titled 'Welcome to Wrexham' and will release on August 25 in the UK, prompting him to contact good friend Ryan Reynolds to express his astonishment. Reynolds co-owns the Welsh club alongside fellow actor Rob McElhenney, having brought their Hollywood charm to the Racecourse Ground in February 2021.

Although cash-rich Wrexham remain in the Vanarama National League, despite a splurge of spending, their story since being bought by Reynolds and McElhenney has made headlines across the globe. Jackman, 53, is one of many worldwide to be hooked by the dramatic tale from north-east Wales. The Aussie replied to Reynolds' Instagram post containing the trailer by saying: "I'm in a puddle of happy tears and covered in chill bumps. I can't wait to watch. I am in love with Wrexham... and you. #WelcomeToWrexham."

The pair share a comedic relationship and enjoy trolling one another on social media, but it's all love between the duo when it comes to Wrexham. Once fans were able to watch the trailer, McElhenney wrote on Twitter : "I fell in love with a sport, a town and a movie star. I couldn't help it."

In response to his tweet, the official Wrexham account wrote: "And we fell in love with you too!" Reynolds and McElhenney are - unsurprisingly - the stars of in the trailer which features behind-the-scenes clips of their work at the Racecourse Ground, their hilarious first press conference last year and the team's matches from throughout their 17-month spell.

In one segment, a young fan suggests that Reynolds chose to buy Wrexham because their red kit matched Deadpool 's suit, the Marvel anti-hero who he's best known for portraying. Clicking onto the joke, the A-lister replied: "That's the real reason, sorry." Also amongst the footage were clips of supporters from the town, detailing their love for the club and what Wrexham means to them.

Unfortunately, Reynolds and McElhenney's tenure is yet to see a promotion. Phil Parkinson 's side came agonisingly close to earning a place in the Football League last season but were narrowly beaten Grimsby Town in the play-offs. The heartache came just weeks after the Dragons lost 1-0 to Bromley in the FA Trophy final at Wembley, with their celebrity owners in attendance.

Wrexham manager Parkinson described the defeat to now League Two Grimsby as "one of the lowest moments" of his career, but wants to put things right in 2022-23. "Both as a player and a manager - I can't ever remember feeling worse than that in my career," the Dragons boss told North Wales Live.

"A lot of it was because of the fantastic support we'd had both home and away, it hurt so much for ourselves and the supporters. But you've got to dust yourself down quickly and there's a real resolve about us to build the squad to give us the best possible chance next season."
