Howe rebukes Gordon for failing to 'control his emotions' over touchline spat

But he was withdrawn in the latter stages to make way for Matt Ritchie over concerns that the £45million forward picked up a knock.

As he made his way off the pitch, Howe was there to greet the youngster, but Gordon shrugged him off, with coach Graeme Jones having to calm him down.

Though there was no bad blood between the pair following the full-time whistle as Howe was pictured with his arm around the player.

However, the ex-Bournemouth boss did warn Gordon that he cannot let his emotions get the better of him again in the future.

Speaking after the match, he said: "From my side, there was 30 seconds left and he was down holding his ankle so I put an experienced player on the pitch.

"It is no reflection on his time on the pitch (to take him off)."

On Gordon's petulant reaction, Howe added: "I've got no problem. Anthony is passionate boy.

"He wants to do well, but there was seconds left on the clock and we wanted to get Matty on because Anthony was holding his ankle.

"He just needs to control his emotions in that moment but there no problems."

Newcastle's victory has further boosted their hopes of a top four finish as they sit third in the table after winning for a fifth successive match.
