How Tifo of French comedy character inspired Toulouse to shock Liverpool win

A curious-looking tifo unveiled by Toulouse fans before their Europa League clash with Liverpool showed just how improbable their victory was.

The French side won 3-2 on the night in dramatic circumstances, a huge shock after they were trounced 5-1 in the reverse fixture at Anfield just 14 days previously.

To make things even more surprising, Toulouse are currently 14th in Ligue 1, and arguably deserved an even bigger margin of victory before Liverpool showed up in the dying minutes.

Les Violets were only promoted back to the top flight last season and finished 13th, but landed their Europa League spot courtesy of a shock Coupe de France triumph.

Even so, their fans clearly weren't too confident pre-match, but brilliantly managed to make fun of themselves while backing their team.

A giant tifo unfurled at the Stadium de Toulouse pre-match will have left the Liverpool squad clueless, but also the home crowd smirking.

The figure of a bald man in between a slogan was that of Jean-Claude Dusse, a Mr. Bean-style comedy character that's been amusing the French for decades.

A bachelor down on his luck when it came to romance, Dusse was the star of the 'Bronzes' franchise, and a cult line he would always repeat was the one Toulouse fans took inspiration from.

The line is: "If I can allow myself to give you one piece of advice, it's to forget that you have no chance, go for it, go for it! You never know, on a misunderstanding it can work…"

That last sentence was the one Toulouse fans unfurled next to the character's face, and it proved the perfect inspiration.
