Hibs star probed after being part of group who stole memorial wreath to dead mum

Scottish Premiership club Hibernian are investigating one of their players after they were part of a group who stole a wreath commemorating a woman's dead mother.

The incident took place in Dalkeith, Midlothian in the early hours of Sunday morning and video footage spread on social media later last weekend.

The film was captured on a Ring doorbell and shows group of men walking down a street in the dark.

Hibs defender Ryan Porteous was among those present as a man entered a garden to take a homemade wreath which was a tribute a late mother, according to the Daily Record.

The report adds the 22-year-old had been out drinking with friends in a miners' club.

The owner of the wreath was able to locate it after publishing a picture of the group of men on social media.

Another local woman is said to have contacted her, identifying Porteous and informing her the memorial had been discarded outside a local Aldi.

It was found damaged and missing her mother's broach, which had been placed in the centre.

Further, the report claims the culprit who stole the wreath asked to call the women to apologise after she made contact with Porteous on Facebook.

A source told the Daily Record: "It happened about 1.30am on Sunday morning.

"The woman makes a wreath every year in memory of her mum who died from Alzheimer's disease.

"It's upsetting that her mum's brooch is missing. The guy who took it contacted her and apologised and said he'd deliver some flowers."

The incident came a matter of hours after Porteous played 90 minutes and kept a clean sheet in a 2-0 win over Ross County at Easter Road.

He celebrated the victory by heading to Dalkeith Miners Club with pals before one of them stole the wreath.

The victim subsequently wrote on Facebook: "Who is this person? He thought it OK to come into my garden... early this morning and steal my wreath. I want it back or I'm going to report you."

The post was later edited to confirm the wreath had been reclaimed and it reads: "I've got it back, damaged, and my mother's brooch missing from the centre.

"This was an Alzheimer's wreath and that brooch can't be replaced. The man who took it phoned and said sorry, so I appreciate that."

Hibernian have launched a probe into the incident and a statement from a club spokesperson reads: "We are aware of imagery that's surfaced regarding Ryan Porteous.

"We are looking into it and will remind him of his responsibilities as a high-profile figure at Hibernian FC."
