Henderson lifts lid on Liverpool's half-time chat with 4-0 lead over Man Utd

Jordan Henderson admitted Liverpool had no intention of letting Manchester United off the hook, despite leading 4-0 at the half-time interval.

Jurgen Klopp's side sent a massive title statement with their 5-0 dismantling of the Red Devils at Old Trafford.

United actually had the best chance of the opening exchanges, when Bruno Fernandes fired over from close range.

But just moments later, the visitors earned a lead they would never come close to relinquishing when Naby Keita opened the scoring.

Diogo Jota made it two after 13 minutes, with Mohamed Salah scoring two more before the hosts were booed by their own supporters after a chastening 45 minutes.

And if there was any suggestion that Liverpool could ease off in the second period, they were quickly quashed as Salah scored his third and the team's fifth just five minutes after the break.

And Henderson has revealed that Klopp's title challengers were fully aware of United's potential for a dramatic turnaround, having come back from 2-0 to beat Atalanta in midweek.

Asked what the message was in the Liverpool dressing room, the Reds skipper told beIN Sports: "Keep going. We knew they would start fast second half, you could see they could turn games around like they did in midweek.

"So even one goal can change the atmosphere.

"We know how quickly football can change so it was about staying on the front foot and try and keep going for the next goal and keeping the ball for long periods, which I thought we did very well.

"So overall the performance from start to finish was very pleasing."

The win leaves Liverpool in second spot in the Premier League table, just one point behind early leaders Chelsea and already seven ahead of their old rivals United.

Liverpool were top of the table at Christmas last season, before injuries derailed their title challenge and Henderson has said it is still too early to even be discussing their credentials.

"Yeah it's an amazing day," the midfielder added: "I've played at Old Trafford many a time and it's a tough place to come, so we can't really play down the performance if you like.

"But at the same time it's only three points which we came for. It's another game that we've won.

"In terms of the title race it's far too early to be speaking about that, we've got to be concentrating on each game.

"There's plenty of football to be played. But of course it's a big day. We'll enjoy tonight, but the focus has got to turn to the next game straight away."

Liverpool's fringe players will now be handed a chance to impress Klopp when they take on Preston in the Carabao Cup on Wednesday night.

It's then Brighton in the league, before the return fixture with Atletico Madrid in Europe, their hectic schedule of 7 fixtures in three weeks then culminates with a clash against high flying West Ham at the London Stadium.
