Fürth have had a tough start to life back in the Bundesliga with just one point from their opening three games. That came at home to Arminia Bielefeld on Matchday 2 thanks to a 1-1 draw, but either side of that they've suffered comprehensive defeats at VfB Stuttgart (5-1) and Mainz (3-0). Any survival hopes will likely come down to their results at Sportpark Ronhof, as well as the form of striker Branimir Hrgota and playmaker Julian Green. Together they had a hand in over 30 goals in Bundesliga 2 last season, but Fürth were also busy in the transfer market late in the summer window: Jetro Willems, Cedric Itten, Sebastian Griesbeck and Nick Viergever all signed for the Cloverleaves. All except defender Viergever featured in a friendly win over Jahn Regensburg during the international break, and coach Stefan Leitl could hand each their competitive debuts on Saturday.
Weghorst was one of a number of Wolfsburg players away on international duty over the last week, but it was left-back Jerome Roussillon who ensured Mark van Bommel's side kept up their 100 per cent record by beating RB Leipzig 1-0 last time out. It followed a come-from-behind 2-1 win at Hertha Berlin and an opening 1-0 victory at home to Bochum, with Weghorst scoring the goal. Things start to hot up now for the Wolves - who are two points clear at the top after three games - as they make their return to the UEFA Champions League away at French champions Lille the Tuesday after they visit Fürth. The extra workload has seen a number of new arrivals at the Volkswagen Arena, including forwards Luca Waldschmidt, Lukas Nmecha and Dodi Lukebakio, as well as Sebastiaan Bornauw in defence. They will need to make a change in midfield, though, with Xaver Schlager now out for several months with a cruciate ligament tear suffered against Leipzig. Vice-captain Josuha Guilavogui is in line to come in alongside Maximilian Arnold.
Match stats
Green scored 21 times in 116 Bundesliga 2 appearances, but is without a goal in eight in the Bundesliga.
Fürth captain Hrgota has scored a goal in each of his last five home games across multiple seasons for the club.
Now in their second top-flight campaign, Fürth are still yet to win a Bundesliga match at home. Their 18-game run without victory on home soil is a new league record.
Weghorst has scored 54 goals in 103 Bundesliga appearances to date, including 10 against seven of eight promoted teams he has faced.
Van Bommel is the first Wolfsburg head coach to win his first three matches in charge since Wolfgang Wolf in the club's debut top-flight campaign (1997/98).
Wolfsburg have conceded a league-low one goal after three rounds of 2021/22 fixtures. They boasted the second best defence last term (24 goals against).
