Garcia has fun at Chelsea fan's expense over 'ghost goal' after Japan's winner

Kaoru Mitoma appeared to only just keep the ball in play before Ao Tanaka tapped in to put the Asian outfit ahead in their crucial Group E clash and despite a VAR review, the goal stood.

It has since sparked debate over whether or not the ball went out of play, with such a tight decision bringing back happy memories for one of Liverpool's heroes.

Following the events on Thursday, Garcia took to Twitter to remind Chelsea fans of a similar incident that happened against them 17 years ago.

When quote tweeting a video proving that angles can be deceptive when analysing if a ball crossed the line, he said: "Hope there's no more complains from Chelsea supporters…"

Garcia scored a hugely controversial goal in the Champions League semi-final for Liverpool against the Blues in 2005, which proved to be enough to send them through to that famous final against AC Milan.

The Spaniard knocked the ball towards the back of the net and despite the efforts from William Gallas to keep it out, he went off to celebrate with his teammates in the belief that he had scored.

However, replays after the goal led many Chelsea fans to believe that the ball didn't cross the line, but their protests could not save them from defeat and Garcia's effort has forever been dubbed a 'ghost goal'.

Tanaka's goal has now become the latest incident to cause huge debate, with his close range finish also having huge affects on the rest of their group.

Japan's win against Spain meant that both countries have progressed to the Round of 16 at this year's World Cup in Qatar.

However, it also saw four-time winners Germany get knocked out at the group stages for the second consecutive tournament, despite their 4-2 win against Costa Rica.

Many different angles of Mitoma's cross have been released, with no one really able to come to a full conclusion as to whether or not it went out of play.

However, it has become one of the biggest talking points of the tournament so far, with Japan's heroics generating another night of pure World Cup drama.
