Forgotten Liverpool man makes comeback after injury lay-off

mirror.co.uk, 21 March 2022, 12:40
A look at how the Reds' contingent of players out on loan in the EFL got on at the weekend, including winger Ojo who is on a temporary deal at Championship side Millwall

Liverpool marched on in the FA Cup after a gritty 1-0 win over plucky Nottingham Forest.

The victory means Jurgen Klopp's side remain on course for an unprecedented quadruple this season. Liverpool, who have already won the EFL Cip, will now take on rivals Manchester City in the semi-finals next month as they chase glory in not only the Premier League but also the Champions League.

But what about the players away from the club this season? Liverpool sent a clutch of young players out on loan this campaign, and changed it up again in January with many plying their trade in the EFL. A handful of them are in either the Championship or League Two at present.

Here, Mirror Sport runs the rule over the aforementioned players and their latest performances.

Sheyi Ojo

Winger Ojo made his return from injury as Millwall lost 2-0 at Stoke City on Saturday.

The 24-year-old had been out since January with an ankle injury, sustained in the Lions' defeat to Nottingham Forest. After being on the bench for the midweek win over Huddersfield, Ojo made a late cameo against the Potters. He got 11 minutes under his belt.

Millwall manager Gary Rowett spoke of his decision to bring Ojo and two other recently injured players back in: "I probably put all three of them on a bit earlier than I would normally do. "I felt at that point we needed to get a bit of a foothold in midfield. It was a bit of a gamble but it got them out there. It will be nice for them to feel a game before the international break and come back renewed and ready to go with eight games to go and see what we can do."

Ojo has only made a handful of appearances for his parent club despite signing for them in 2011. His only Premier League minutes all came in the 2015-16 season. His contract at Anfield expires this summer.

Nat Phillips

Defender Phillips played the full 90 minutes as Bournemouth cruised to a 3-0 win at Huddersfield on Saturday.

The centre-half had a shaky start in West Yorkshire but recovered well and helped Scott Parker's side to an important win against one of their promotion rivals. Phillips did see plenty of the ball too, with his 110 touches the second-highest of anyone on the pitch.

Neco Williams

Fulham had a weekend off but Williams is set to travel with the Wales squad for their crucial World Cup 2022 play-off against Austria on Thursday.

Sepp van den Berg

Like Williams, the Dutch defender had a blank weekend as Preston North End were without a game. It allowed van den Berg and his colleagues to stew over their 4-0 loss to Luton last Wednesday.

Ben Davies

The Sheffield United centre-half missed a third successive game at the weekend.

Davies picked up a muscle injury earlier this month and that saw him miss out against Coventry, Blackpool and Barnsley. He has made 18 appearances for his temporary employers this season, scoring the recent winner against Blackburn.

Jake Cain

Midfielder Cain has posted some impressive performances at Newport County this season but has missed the last two matches. He recently said of his loan stint: "I've had a good run of games recently, so it's been good to get in the team and get some experience.

"It was about coming away and being in a first-team environment, learning a different part of my game and just maturing as a player and as a person as well."

Paul Glatzel

Glatzel's season has come to an early end after he suffered a hamstring injury in Tranmere Rovers' recent home win over Mansfield Town. The young forward had scored six times this season for the League Two club but he'll now return to Liverpool, bringing an early end to his time with Rovers.
