FA Cup scores and results as Newcastle suffer upset on Kieran Trippier debut

mirror.co.uk, 8 January 2022, 17:21
It has been a day of shocks aplenty in the third round of the world's oldest cup competition, with Eddie Howe's Magpies suffering a an early exit at the hands of third tier Cambridge

Newcastle United suffered an embarrassing FA Cup third round exit at the hands of Cambridge United.

It ensured a debut to forget for United's Kieran Trippier after his £12million transfer from Atletico Madrid.

The League One side belied the 41-place gap between the two teams as Joe Ironside swept home after Newcastle defenders failed to clear their lines.

Try as they might, Newcastle just could not find a way past Dimitar Mitov in the U's goal.

Trippier's inclusion just a day after completing his move to St James' Park failed to give the hosts the necessary fillip they required, as Cambridge held on for the shock of the day.

Elsewhere, fellow Premier League strugglers Burnley were dumped out after losing 2-1 at home to Championship side Huddersfield Town.

Sean Dyche was absent from Turf Moor due to a positive Covid-19 test, leaving assistant Ian Woan to oversee duties.

And despite Jay Rodriguez giving them a first half lead, the Terriers sprang a shock as goals from Josh Koroma and Matty Pearson ensured an early exit for the Clarets.

Non-league duo Kidderminster and Boreham Wood enjoyed memorable afternoons by both booking their places in the fourth round after major upsets against EFL sides at home.

Kidderminster, the lowest-ranked side still in the competition, came from behind to dump out Championship side Reading. Sam Austin and Amari Morgan-Smith both struck to cancel out George Puscas' opener, as Harriers made light work of the 79 places between the two.

As for Boreham Wood, they beat League One side AFC Wimbledon 2-0 thanks to goals from Tyrone Marsh and Adrian Clifton.

Other shocks saw League Two Hartlepool United knock out Championship side Blackpool, with the hosts coming from behind to win 2-1 and seal a fourth round spot for the first time in 13 years.

2013 FA Cup kings Wigan, of League One, beat Championship Blackburn 3-2 in an enthralling contest at the DW Stadium.

Crystal Palace fought back to beat London rivals Millwall 2-1 in a lunchtime derby, whilst Leicester thumped fellow top flight side Watford 4-1 in a game delayed for a lengthy period due to floodlight failure.

Brentford's Bryan Mbeumo came off the bench to score a 21-minute hat-trick in a 4-1 win at Port Vale.

Three of the 3pm ties went to extra time. Barnsley and Barrow played out a pulsating 4-4 draw at Oakwell, whilst QPR versus Rotherham ended goalless after 90 minutes and West Brom drew 1-1 with Brighton. Barnsley and Brighton won in the extra 30 minutes whilst QPR won 8-7 on penalties after a marathon shoot-out.

There were also wins for Championship quartet Fulham, Middlesbrough, Coventry and Peterborough.

There are five games kicking off at 5.30pm Saturday, with a further nine games on Sunday and one on Monday night.

The draw for the fourth round takes place on Sunday afternoon.
