England's World Cup stars and how they performed in final Premier League matches

mirror.co.uk, 14 November 2022, 08:30
The Premier League is now on a hiatus while the World Cup is held with the last round of action having been the final chance for players to earn a place in England's starting line-up against Iran Gareth Southgate saw his England squad come through their final Premier League matches unscathed

The first half of the Premier League season is over and attention is now fully focused on the upcoming World Cup in Qatar, which kicks off in less than a week.

England boss Gareth Southgate will have been closely watching the 26 players who have been included in his squad over the final round of action. There were mixed fortunes for the stars pushing to be named in the starting line-up for the Three Lions' opening game against Iran.

Southgate has just seven days to decide who will make that line-up before his side get their World Cup campaign underway. Here, Mirror Football looks at how the England squad fared in their final Premier League game before travelling to Qatar.

Bournemouth 3 Everton 0

Jordan Pickford (Everton)

Picked a bad time to make a rare recent mistake on the eve of heading to Qatar.

Conor Coady (Everton)

Tried his best to organise Everton's woeful defence. Let down by those around him.

HAVE YOUR SAY! What should be England's starting line-up against Iran? Comment below.

Fulham 1 Man Utd 2

Marcus Rashford (Man United)

The United striker made himself public enemy No1 with Fulham fans by continually going down for treatment - but seemed to finish in decent shape. Worked hard.

Luke Shaw (Man United)

Being England's only fit natural left back in the squad meant Gareth Southgate must have been praying he came through unscathed. He did and his crossing was impressive.

Liverpool 3 Southampton 1

Trent Alexander-Arnold (Liverpool)

Played well. Was defensively sound and Mohamed Salah should have scored from his great cross in the second half.

Man City 1 Brentford 2

John Stones (Man City)

Excellent display as stand in right back, going to Qatar in top form.

Phil Foden (Man City)

One of the few bright sparks for City with energetic, quality effort.

Newcastle 1 Chelsea 0

Callum Wilson (Newcastle)

After a week suffering illness, came on as sub and emerged unscathed.

Nick Pope (Newcastle)

After three penalty saves in midweek, a magnificent stop from Connor Gallagher against Chelsea and is poised to mount a serious challenge to Jordan Pickford.

Kieran Trippier (Newcastle)

Sure starter for England, after another all-action, defensive and creative display.

Conor Gallagher (Chelsea)

One of few Chelsea stars who showed energy, and looks fresh and full of running.

Mason Mount (Chelsea)

One long dribble aside, had a disappointing game and may not be the sure starter he once was.

Tottenham 4 Leeds 3

Harry Kane (Tottenham)

Everyone not only in the Tottenham Hotspur stadium but across the country held their breath when the England captain went down in the first half. But he got up wincing - and all was ok. Another well-taken goal, his twelfth Premier League goal of the season, sent him off to Qatar in good shape.

Eric Dier (Tottenham)

Had a sticky send-off. Was caught by Rodrigo for Leeds' first goal on Saturday, and the Yorkshire side's pace and skill gave him a torrid afternoon. Still, a stern test to get the 28-year-old on his toes for his second World Cup.

West Ham Leicester 2

Declan Rice (West Ham)

Solid without being spectacular but, crucially, made it through 90-plus minutes unscathed.

James Maddison (Leicester)

Capped a wonderful few days with a goal but his afternoon was cut short when he left the field as a precaution midway through the first half.

Wolves Arsenal 2

Aaron Ramsdale (Arsenal)

Continued as an ever-present for the leaders and finished game despite treatment after being clattered by Adama Traore.

Ben White (Arsenal)

Continued to impress at right-back as played the whole game and helped the Gunners to victory and clean sheet.

Bukayo Saka (Arsenal)

Deployed on the right wing and nearly got on the end of Fabio Vieira's cross for the opener when Martin Odegaard netted.
