England in Euro 2020 final headlines an absolutely incredible weekend of sport

talksport.com, 9 July 2021, 15:00
Sorry tennis, rugby, UFC and anything that isn't England vs Italy in the final of Euro 2020.

There is only one thing that truly matters this weekend and that's the Three Lions trying to win their first-ever European Championship, ending 55 years of major tournament hurt since 1966.

However, with kick-off at 8pm on Sunday, the population faces a nervous wait for the Wembley showdown.

Luckily, there is plenty of other sport to keep us all entertained.

In fact, it's probably the best weekend of sport ever…

Conor McGregor vs Dustin Poirier

Can't sleep on Saturday night? Not a problem.

Just pull an all-nighter and watch Notorious in the Octagon.

His trilogy fight with Poirier in Las Vegas should get under way at around 5am UK time, with an exciting undercard to keep you going from about 1am.

It's one apiece after Poirier avenged his 2014 defeat to McGregor earlier this year - and, as always, the build-up has been nasty.

You won't want to miss this.

BETTING SPECIAL - GET MCGREGOR TO WIN VIA KO, TKO OR DQ AT HUGE 40/1

Copa America final

Brazil vs Argentina. Neymar vs Lionel Messi.

It's a shame the Copa America has clashed with the Euros, because it's been fantastic.

And the final will see two of the world's most famous footballing nations, with the players to match, battle it out for glory.

A major tournament success with Argentina is basically the only thing missing from Messi's glorious career, but his former Barcelona teammate and close friend Neymar stands in his way.

The action will get under way at 1am on Saturday night/Sunday morning. Another one for you insomniacs.

Wimbledon finals

During the days, we've got Wimbledon to keep us entertained.

As always, the ladies' final will take place on Saturday and the men's on Sunday.

There appears to be no stopping Novak Djokovic and quite frankly it would be a shock if he didn't win the tournament.

Victory would draw him level with Roger Federer and Rafa Nadal on 20 grand slam titles, equalling the all-time record.

On the women's side, it's a battle of current and past world numbers ones with Ashleigh Barty up against Karolina Pliskova.

Of course, there are various other finals to ensure we won't even get a chance to think about the England game. Not too much, anyway.

Full house for England vs Pakistan

The cricket lads will be delighted their second ODI against Pakistan doesn't clash with the final.

And it's just down the road from Wembley, at Lord's on Saturday.

But one thing they have that the footballers don't is a packed out stadium.

While the Euro 2020 final will be capped at 60,000 supporters, Lord's will host a full capacity this weekend as part of the government's test event scheme.

Expect plenty of football-related chanting, and some scintillating white-ball cricket from the world champions, who won the first ODI with consummate ease despite being without their entire original 16-man squad due to a coronavirus outbreak.

Lions in action

The British and Irish Lions will play on Saturday after all.

It's the same team they beat 54-7 on Wednesday, again, but this time they'll play the Sharks at Loftus Versveld Pretoria with an entirely different side.

England hooker Jamie George will lead a side containing 13 changes from that XV with centre Elliot Daly and wing Duhan van der Merwe the survivors.

Euro 2020 final

Then it's only the biggest sporting event in this country since the 1966 World Cup.

England will come to a standstill and 56 million people will watch Gareth Southgate's men try to beat Italy at Wembley.

No superlatives can capture how big this is, only that it's the most important football match of anyone's lifetime, unless you're over 55.

We're nervous just writing this.

And then…

Take a few days to regather your thoughts. Wash the beer out of your clothes.

We've got the Open Championship at Royal St George's next Thursday, which sort of represents golf coming home after the 2020 event was cancelled.

The British Grand Prix takes place at Silverstone a week on from the Euro 2020 final too.

And then it's the small matter of the Olympics in Tokyo, while Lions also get their series against South Africa under way this month.

Heck, the Premier League will resume before we've even gone to sleep.
