Dean Henderson makes Man Utd transfer U-turn after De Gea gets nod ahead of him

Dean Henderson is ready to stay and fight for his Manchester United future this month despite making just two appearances this term.

The shot-stopper last played for United on December 8 in a 1-1 draw against Young Boys in the Champions League at Old Trafford.

He has been an unused sub on 17 occasions this term, including at Brentford on Wednesday night, and linked with a loan move away from United.

His potential suitors include Spurs, where Hugo Lloris' contract is up this summer.

Henderson, who was previously loaned to Sheffield United from 2018-2020, is contracted to United until 2025 and earns around £120,000-a-week after penning a deal in 2020.

The star has been considering his future but is willing to stay this month and continue to battle it out with David de Gea for the No.1 shirt.

But his lack of action has seen him lose his place in the England squad, which now includes Sam Johnstone and Aaron Ramsdale as well as Jordan Pickford.

Henderson was told in the summer he had a great chance to start the season as the United No.1.

But Henderson contracted Covid-19 in late July and he was laid low for over a month.

De Gea started the season unchallenged and has regained form, with the Spaniard arguably United's player of the season so far.

Henderson didn't make his first appearance until September 22 in a 1-0 home Carabao Cup loss to West Ham.

United boss Ralf Rangnick admitted this month it has not been easy to satisfy Henderson.

Rangnick said: "I told him that I would like him to stay because he is a fantastic goalkeeper.

"I would really like to have him on board.

"I can fully understand that he wants to play because he is at an age where, as a goalkeeper, you should regularly play, but on the other hand, we are still in three competitions, and therefore we need the two and three goalkeepers we have right now."

Rangnick wants three first-team-ready goalkeepers and the fourth-choice Lee Grant has not played since November 2019.

Tom Heaton, currently third-choice, belatedly made his United debut last month after re-signing on a free transfer in the summer.

The 35-year-old former United trainee came on for Henderson as a sub against Young Boys.

Rangnick explained: "We decided, if at all possible if the chronology of the game would allow it, that we wanted to give him his debut at Old Trafford.

"He's a fantastic person, very good goalkeeper, and he more than deserved that opportunity to have his debut at the age of 35."
