A Chesterfield footballer has been arrested in connection with an alleged assault on Oldham player Hallam Hope.
The alleged incident occurred in a car park outside Oldham's Boundary Park ground on September 4, after Chesterfield had won a National League game 2-0.
Hope, a 28-year-old Barbados international forward, required hospital treatment and has not played since the alleged attack. At the time the former Everton youth product said he would be "out of action for some weeks."
Now Greater Manchester Police have said that an arrest was made five days later with the suspect released while investigations continue.
"A man was arrested on September 9, on suspicion of assault following a report of the assault of a man in his 20s, at Boundary Park, Oldham, on 4 September 2022," GMP said in a statement. "The suspect has since been released under investigation."
Following the alleged incident a Chesterfield statement said: "We are aware of an allegation relating to an unnamed Chesterfield player. We are assisting Greater Manchester Police with their enquiries. As this is an ongoing investigation, no further comment will be made at this stage."
Both clubs said they are assisting police with their enquiries and Oldham reportedly submitted CCTV footage of the alleged incident.
Chesterfield are currently top of the National League with seven wins and three draws from their opening 10 fixtures.
