Busy Chelsea and Spurs, fast Arsenal but Man United a worry - Big Six transfers rated

talksport.com, 12 July 2022, 21:30
The new Premier League season is just under a month away and clubs have been strengthening their squads ahead of what is set to be another enthralling campaign.

The Big Six, in particular, are under pressure to buy well, in order to challenge at the top end of the table - but where do they all still need to improve this summer?

Manchester City

This fine squad just seems to keep getting better and better.

On top of their already star-studded roster of players, they added Borussia Dortmund superstar Erling Haaland to their ranks this summer.

They also signed England international Kalvin Phillips from Leeds, who will be a superb option in midfield, as well as back-up goalkeeper Stefan Ortega from German club Arminia Bielefeld.

Looking at the players Pep Guardiola has at his disposal, it's hard to identify any real weaknesses, especially in forward areas, even with Raheem Sterling set to leave the club for Chelsea.

Nathan Ake is set to join him at Stamford Bridge, which may mean they look for another centre-back.

A left-back also appears to be a position they want to strengthen, with Brighton's Marc Cucurella high on their list of priorities this summer.

Liverpool

The Reds seem done with their summer business, with right-back Calvin Ramsay and midfielder Fabio Carvalho arriving, as well as potential club-record signing Darwin Nunez.

After the departure of Sadio Mane, a forward was needed, so the Reds went and bought one, doing it as efficiently and comfortably as ever.

Competition for Trent Alexander-Arnold was also something that supporters wanted, and Ramsay - who could push the England international for a starting spot in a few years - fits that bill.

Some supporters are keen for another midfielder, despite the addition of the exciting Carvalho from Fulham amid suggestions the club's interested in Jude Bellingham but boss Jurgen Klopp has ruled that out, unless anyone leaves the club.

Chelsea

Thomas Tuchel's side are set to be one of the busiest clubs before the transfer window shuts in just over a month's time.

As mentioned earlier, deals for Sterling and Ake both look set to go through but, after the departure of Romelu Lukaku back to Inter Milan and Hakim Ziyech also potentially leaving on loan, there could be another forward on the way.

It feels like they're linked with a new player almost every day, with the likes of Raphinha, Serge Gnabry, and Robert Lewandowski all reportedly wanted by the Blues.

Tuchel may also need to bring in another defender, with Andreas Christensen and Antonio Rudiger both leaving for La Liga giants Barcelona and Real Madrid this summer.

Kalidou Koulibaly, Matthijs De Ligt, Jules Kounde, and Josko Gvardiol have all been linked with a move to Stamford Bridge and could replace the outgoing duo.

There have also been murmurs that a certain Cristiano Ronaldo could be playing in west London next season. No biggie.

Tottenham

They have done a lot of their business early this summer and, not only have they done it quickly, they've done it very well.

They seem to have strengthened in almost every position, with Fraser Forster in goal, Clement Lenglet at centre-back, Ivan Perisic at wing-back, Yves Bissouma in central midfield, and Richarlison in attack all joining.

They are also still in talks with Middlesbrough right-back Djed Spence, which would see Antonio Conte strengthen his squad ten-fold - but they may not be done there.

As well as Lenglet, Spurs have been linked with another left-sided centre-back, Pau Torres, which would leave them with a squad not only capable of getting into the top four, but pushing for the title.

There are still questions about their creativity from midfield, which may have been solved by the return of Christian Erisken, but the Dane looks set to join Manchester United instead.

Arsenal

Like their north London rivals, Arsenal were quick to sort out their business this summer.

Gabriel Jesus and Fabio Vieira signed for a combined £79million from Arsenal and Porto respectively, with it clear that both a goalscorer and another centre midfielder were needed this summer.

But Mikel Arteta looks to still want another forward, with Leeds' Raphinha also on their wishlist.

American keeper Matt Turner has been signed as a back-up to Aaron Ramsdale - with Bernd Leno set to leave - whilst Brazillian youngster Marquinhos has also joined the club.

And centre-back William Saliba will feel like a new signing having returned to the Gunners' pre-season training after a fantastic loan spell at Marseille.

Manchester United

The Red Devils have been the quietest of the Big Six when it comes to transfers this summer when, arguably, they should have been the busiest.

Tyrell Malacia is the only signing they've made so far, the left-back joining in a £14m deal from Feyenoord.

Eriksen is also close to a move to Old Trafford on a free transfer, after his Brentford contract expired earlier this summer.

Talks with Barcelona's Frenkie de Jong and Ajax's Lisandro Martinez are ongoing but, even with the additions of those two, they probably still need a few more incoming, especially if last season's top scorer, talisman and superstar Ronaldo leaves.

It's going to be a very busy transfer window for Man United.
