Bruno Fernandes doubles down on Cristiano Ronaldo with personal touch

mirror.co.uk, 23 December 2021, 21:46
The Portugal international was one of a number of happy United stars as the current crop of Red Devils talent continued their return to training after the recent brief absence

Bruno Fernandes has joined forces with Nemanja Matic to poke fun at Manchester United talisman Cristiano Ronaldo after the 36-year-old was on the losing side during a training game.

United's stars have returned to their Carrington training base this week after being forced to stay away in the wake of a steep rise in cases of Covid-19 within the group.

Ralf Rangnick's side were left with little choice but to postpone two fixtures in response - the away trip to Brentford and a home clash with Graham Potter's Brighton& Hove Albion.

The Red Devils were left threadbare, with Rangnick having just nine fit players to choose from for the game against Brentford before that figure reduced even further to seven by the time the Brighton fixture had come around.

However, United are back involved in Premier League action this coming match-week, travelling to St James' Park to take on Eddie Howe's struggling Newcastle side, desperate to lift themselves out of the relegation zone.

Ahead of the game, United's star-studded squad looked in high spirits, participating in a unserious, though clearly still competitive training game after they had been put through their paces by Rangnick.

Matic was one of the members of the winning side and quickly took to Instagram to let his followers know, uploading a snap of him accompanied by a number of his teammates that was captioned: "Winning team! @cristiano are you ok?" accompanied by a laughing face emoji.

The snap was eerily similar to the kind Ronaldo usually posts himself when he has come out victorious - and Matic clearly wasted no time in reminding the five-time Ballon d'Or winner he had no such luck this time around.

Fellow Portugal international Fernandes did not support his international teammate, instead sticking the boot in further with his reply to Matic's post.

The 28-year-old used Ronaldo's trademark celebration against him, writing: "SIUUUUUUUUU" next to a fire emoji.

Rangnick will be hoping the unexpected break has not scuppered the momentum he was building as United interim boss.

Having taken charge of two Premier League games as well as one Champions League tie, the 63-year-old German is yet to taste defeat since his arrival.

The league victories came against Crystal Palace and Norwich respectively, both 1-0 wins, ensuring his United side are yet to concede a goal in domestic action.

Things didn't fare quite as well in the Champions League, with United held to a 1-1 draw at home to Swiss outfit BSC Young Boys, though progression to the knockout stages had already been secured.
